A review of smart homes-Present state and future challenges

The lithium-ion battery is an ideal candidate for a wide variety of applications due to its high energy/power density and operating voltage. Some limitations of existing lithium-ion battery technology include underutilization, stress-induced material damage, capacity fade, and the potential for thermal runaway. This paper reviews efforts in the modeling and simulation of lithium-ion batteries and their use in the design of better batteries. Likely future directions in battery modeling and design including promising research opportunities are outlined.

Modeling and Simulation of Lithium-Ion Batteries from a Systems Engineering Perspective

This paper presents algorithms for the automatic synthesis of real-time controllers by finding a winning strategy for certain games defined by the timed-automata of Alur and Dill. In such games, the outcome depends on the players' actions as well as on their timing. We believe that these results will pave the way for the application of program synthesis techniques to the construction of real-time embedded systems from their specifications.

On the synthesis of discrete controllers for timed systems

We review a range of techniques related to navigation of unmanned vehicles through unknown environments with obstacles, especially those that rigorously ensure collision avoidance (given certain assumptions about the system). This topic continues to be an active area of research, and we highlight some directions in which available approaches may be improved. The paper discusses models of the sensors and vehicle kinematics, assumptions about the environment, and performance criteria. Methods applicable to stationary obstacles, moving obstacles and multiple vehicles scenarios are all reviewed. In preference to global approaches based on full knowledge of the environment, particular attention is given to reactive methods based on local sensory data, with a special focus on recently proposed navigation laws based on model predictive and sliding mode control.

Algorithms for collision-free navigation of mobile robots in complex cluttered environments: a survey

A rough set theory is a new mathematical tool to deal with uncertainty and vagueness of decision system and it has been applied successfully in all the fields. It is used to identify the reduct set of the set of all attributes of the decision system. The reduct set is used as preprocessing technique for classification of the decision system in order to bring out the potential patterns or association rules or knowledge through data mining techniques. Several researchers have contributed variety of algorithms for computing the reduct sets by considering different cases like inconsistency, missing attribute values and multiple decision attributes of the decision system. This paper focuses on the review of the techniques for dimensionality reduction under rough set theory environment. Further, the rough sets hybridization with fuzzy sets, neural network and metaheuristic algorithms have also been reviewed. The performance analysis of the algorithms has been discussed in connection with the classification.

In this paper, we show how to apply recent tools for the automatic synthesis of robust and near-optimal controllers for a real industrial case study. We show how to use three different classes of models and their supporting existing tools, Uppaal-TiGA for synthesis, phaver for verification, and Simulink for simulation, in a complementary way. We believe that this case study shows that our tools have reached a level of maturity that allows us to tackle interesting and relevant industrial control problems.

Automatic Synthesis of Robust and Optimal Controllers --- An Industrial Case Study

We present a complete tool chain for automatic controller synthesis using Uppaal Tiga and Simulink. The tool chain is explored using an industrial case study for climate control in a pig stable. The problem is modeled as a game, and we use Uppaal Tiga to automatically synthesize safe strategies that are transformed for input to Simulink, which is used to run simulations on the controller and generate code that can be executed in an actual pig stable provided by industrial partner Skov A/S. The model allows for guiding the synthesis process and generate different strategies that are compared through simulations.

Guided controller synthesis for climate controller using UPPAAL TIGA

The paper addresses performance analysis associated with analysis and design of embedded real time systems with processor sharing among a number of processes. The main contribution concerns the application of Network Calculus (DNC) principles to the performance analysis of such systems, where complex data flow graphs prohibit the use of standard scheduling analysis techniques. Cyclic flow graphs take the problem into new grounds to which the theoretical basis for DNC is extended in this paper. An example is provided to support the practical relevance of the developed approach denoted CyNC and comparative results for CyNC and alternative methods are presented and commented.

Network Calculus for Real Time Analysis of Embedded Systems with Cyclic Task Dependencies

In this paper we present two frameworks that have been implemented to link traditional model-checking techniques to the domain of control. The techniques are based on solving a timed game and using the resulting solution (a strategy) as a controller. The obtained discrete controller must fit within its continuous environment, which is modelled and taken care of in our frameworks. Our first technique does it by using Matlab to discretise the problem and then Uppaal-tiga to solve the obtained timed game. This is implemented as a toolbox. The second technique relies on the user defining a timed game model in Uppaal-tiga. Then the strategy is automatically imported in Simulink as an S-function for simulation and validation purposes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these frameworks in different case-studies.
