Rehabilitation Administration Literature: 30+ Years of Role and Function

One-hundred and two graduate level, allied health students’ preferences for social distance from persons with various conditions were surveyed. Based on previous research, we hypothesized that participants’ preferred social distance from various conditions would reveal a significant interaction between perceived threat (i.e., threatening vs. non-threatening) and visibility (i.e., obvious vs. hidden) status of each condition. Results from a repeated-measures ANOVA showed support for an interaction in that (a) participants preferred the most social distance from persons with threatening conditions regardless if the conditions were obvious or hidden, and (b) the amount of social distance preferred from non-threatening conditions was significantly moderated by the conditions being obvious or hidden. Also, a one-way ANOVA revealed rehabilitation counseling students preferred significantly less social distance from persons with various conditions than communication sciences and disorders students and physical therapy students. Implications of these results for rehabilitation research, practice, and education are discussed.

Information aimed at increasing rehabilitation counselors' awareness of personal values influencing paternalistic interventions is presented. The potential compromise of rehabilitation consumers' autonomy is the chief reference point for understanding the impact of rehabilitation counselors' paternalistic interventions. Strategies for recognizing the influence of personal value systems are presented with the intention of optimizing positive paternalistic interventions.

Who Gets to Choose: A Primer for Increasing Rehabilitation Counselors' Awareness for Navigating “Paternalistic” Interventions

This article — third in a series encouraging rehabilitation counselors to publish — surveyed published authors of JARC over a 6-year period (1990-1996) and summarized their advice for aspiring journal article writers. Surveyed authors (1) identified common obstacles to publishing efforts, and (2) annotated useful resources for publishing. Finally, they (3) offered general advice for preparing and submitting a first manuscript to rehabilitation counseling-related journals.

Writing for Publication: Advice from Authors

Encouraging rehabilitation counseling practitioners to enter the arena of journal-writing is an ongoing concern of the profession. This article intends to help authors, especially practitioners who have not submitted previously, organize research materials for writing articles. A model of organizing standard components of a professional journal article is presented and discussed. The guidelines presented also provide a summary of the manuscript format and editorial review process. Suggestions presented provide a basis for assisting the rehabilitation counselor practitioner who is considering writing a journal article.

The purpose of this paper is to help rehabilitation practitioners enter the arena of written scholarship and dissemination of knowledge. This article offers practical information on the writing and publishing process. This includes tips on how to select a topic, learn to write effectively, prepare a manuscript for publication, and choose a professional journal. Finally, this paper summarizes the manuscript reviewing process.
