We have tried in this review to outline the interactional capabilities afforded by tangible technology by analysing the properties of forms of action and representation embodied in their use.We have also reviewed some of the relevant research from developmental psychology and education in order to draw out implications for the potential benefits and limitations of these approaches to learning and teaching.we present case studies of educational applications of tangible technologies.Finally,implications are drawn for future research,applications and practice.

Literature Review in Learning with Tangible Technologies

Gamification has been identified as an interesting technique to foster collaboration in educational contexts. However, there are not many approaches that tackle this in primary school learning environments. The most popular technologies in the classroom are still traditional video consoles and desktop computers, which complicate the design of collaborative activities since they are essentially mono-user. The recent popularization of handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones has made it possible to build affordable, scalable, and improvised collaborative gamified activities by creating a multi-tablet environment. In this paper we present Quizbot, a collaborative gamified quiz application to practice different subjects, which can be defined by educators beforehand. Two versions of the system are implemented: a tactile for tablets laid on a table, in which all the elements are digital; and a tangible in which the tablets are scattered on the floor and the components are both digital and physical objects. Both versions of Quizbot are evaluated and compared in a study with eighty primary-schooled children in terms of user experience and quality of collaboration supported. Results indicate that both versions of Quizbot are essentially equally fun and easy to use, and can effectively support collaboration, with the tangible version outperforming the other one with respect to make the children reach consensus after a discussion, split and parallelize work, and treat each other with more respect, but also presenting a poorer time management.

Evaluating a tactile and a tangible multi-tablet gamified quiz system for collaborative learning in primary education

Technological advancement in general is providing better and cheaper solutions to assist the visually impaired (VI) community. Although information communication technology (ICT) has great potential to support the inclusion of VI people in educational, social and workforce settings, there are far fewer ICT projects for VI people compared to other projects. This systematic literature review provides our findings on the existing state of ICT projects and describes outstanding issues in ICT support of VI people. Based on our findings, we suggest increased collaboration among healthcare professionals, caregivers, programmers, engineers, as well as policy makers; and adoption of policies in future ICT projects for VI people. A wide search of seven journal databases found a relevant cross-section of articles that were published between 2010 and 2015. Software Zotero Standalone and EndNote were used to screen and maintain metadata. After the initial screening of 6993 titles, 683 abstracts were scrutinised, from which 55 full text articles were selected for final review. We analysed and synthesised 37 articles. Our findings show the progress, awareness, interest, and issues in ICT integration to improve the quality of life for VI people. Three emergent topics for VI people are (a) assistive technology, (b) e-accessibility, and (c) virtual interfaces. Our findings suggest that ICT-aided applications can bring positive changes for VI people. We advance several issues that should be addressed and further developed, collaboratively, to spread awareness and invoke new policies aimed to improve the quality of life of VI people.

A Systematic Literature Review of the Application of Information Communication Technology for Visually Impaired People

Abstract Student engagement has been identified as an important precursor to student learning. Engagement, especially in the so-called problematic middle years, is now at the centre of mainstream education discussion and debate. Each discourse produces its own distinct understanding of what really defines student engagement. Three contesting epistemological constructions of student engagement are identified, seeking to answer three linked questions: whose conception of engagement is most worthwhile; what actually are the purposes of engagement and who benefits (and gets excluded) from these purposes; and finally how might we conceive of student engagement in order to achieve the twin goals of social justice and academic achievement?

Re)conceptualising student engagement as doing education ... not doing time

Kiteracy is an educational kit designed to improve the literacy process of children with Down syndrome by enabling higher levels of interaction. The kit is based on two Spanish literacy methods: global and phonics. In this work, we present a qualitative study based on video-recorded sessions with twelve children from a Down syndrome institution. The study analyzes three forms of interactions: cardboard, multi-touch and tangible. The task carried out by special education teachers and children in the experimental sessions involved working in pairs (Teacher-child) and autonomous self-learning (child only). Through the sessions, we identified situations in which the teacher took the control in the cardboard version. In the multi-touch version, both the teacher and the child shared the control. However in the tangible version the child took the control. In the self-learning sessions, we observed that multi-touch and tangible interaction seems to offer an enjoyable time for children. Surveys and interviews with teachers revealed that tangible objects offered greater adaptability to create playful reading strategies.

Kiteracy: a kit of tangible objects to strengthen literacy skills in children with down syndrome

Se reporta una investigacion que analizo la relacion entre la procrastinacion, adiccion al internet y rendimiento academico de universitarios Se aplico metodologia mixta de dos fases En la primera, se ejecuto un diseno cuantitativo, no experimental, transversal y alcance correlacional Los resultados indican que, la procrastinacion correlaciona con la adiccion al internet (r=0,50, p=<0,001) y que los estudiantes con alto rendimiento academico, presentan un menor comportamiento procrastinador t(244)=-3,60, p<0,001 y de adiccion al internet t(244)=-2,44, p=0,01, a diferencia de universitarios con un rendimiento academico inferior En la fase cualitativa se encontraron narrativas asociadas a la crianza recibida, experiencias pasadas determinantes, uso de funciones cognitivas, uso del internet y otras categorias Finalmente, se discuten los datos en relacion a investigaciones previas y mediante la integracion de los resultados cuantitativos y cualitativos

Teaching children with intellectual disabilities is a big challenge for most parents and educators Special education teachers use learning strategies to develop and enhance motivation for complex learning tasks Literacy acquisition is an essential and life-long skill for a child with intellectual disabilities In this context, technology can support specific strategies that will help children learn to read This paper introduces a Tangible User Interface (TUI) system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to support literacy for children with Down syndrome Our proposed system focuses on the integration of RFID tags in 3D printed objects and low cost toys The paper describes the experience of using some materials covering the tags and the different problems related to the material and distance of radio wave propagation The results of a preliminary evaluation in a special education institution showed that the system helps to improve the interaction between teachers and children The use of a TUI seems to give a physical sensory experience to develop literacy skills in children with Down syndrome

Creating TUIs Using RFID Sensors—A Case Study Based on the Literacy Process of Children with Down Syndrome

At present, the lack of adequate methods to test whether a mobile application is accessible has become a major challenge for accessibility experts. This study was applied to ten mobile applications, the most popular according to PCMAG. We propose to use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 through manual review and automatic review with the Google Play Store Accessibility Scanner validator for the Android. The evaluation results of the mobile applications indicate that the applications are not accessible because they do not comply with the minimum required level proposed by WCAG 2.1. The research proposes suggestions to improve and raise awareness among the designers of mobile applications, in such a way that more inclusive mobile applications accessible to all types of users are built.

Accessibility Assessment in Mobile Applications for Android

The goal of a telerehabilitation platform is to safely and securely facilitate the rehabilitation of patients through the use of telecommunication technologies complemented with the use of biomedical smart sensors. The purpose of this study was to perform a usability evaluation of a telerehabilitation platform. To improve the level of usability, the researchers developed and proposed an iterative process. The platform uses a digital representation of the patient which duplicates the therapeutic exercise being executed by the patient; this is detected by a Kinect camera and sensors in real time. This study used inspection methods to perform a usability evaluation of an exploratory prototype of a telerehabilitation platform. In addition, a cognitive workload assessment was performed to complement the usability evaluation. Users were involved through all the stages of the iterative refinement process. Usability issues were progressively reduced from the first iteration to the fourth iteration according to improvements which were developed and applied by the experts. Usability issues originally cataloged as catastrophic were reduced to zero, major usability problems were reduced to ten (2.75%) and minor usability problems were decreased to 141 (38.74%). This study also intends to serve as a guide to improve the usability of e-Health systems in alignment with the software development cycle.
