Evaluation of throughput estimation models and algorithms for WLAN frequency planning

The growing use of multimedia communication applications, with specific bandwidth and real-time delivery requirements has created the need for an integrated services Internet in which traditional best-effort datagram delivery can coexist with additional enhanced quality of service (QoS) delivery classes. Such classes provide data flows with QoS commitments with regard to bandwidth, packet loss, and delay through the reservation of network resources along the data path, which can be done using the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP). This article is a tutorial on how RSVP can be used by end applications to ensure that they receive the end-to-end QoS that they require.

Careful configuration of frequencies for WLAN access points (AP) is crucial for ensuring the optimal performance of the network. Thus, advanced tools for WLAN frequency management tasks are needed. This paper presents a practical tool for the frequency management in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The tool minimizes the interference between APs and consequently maximizes the effective capacity of the network. It also contains a graphical user interface (GUI) showing an illustrative view of the network state in frequency domain. The tool has been designed for administrators of medium and large WLAN networks, such as used in companies, airports, and campus areas. In the presented case, the throughput of the optimized network was 60 % higher compared to the original network with random channels

Frequency management tool for multi-cell WLAN performance optimization

This paper presents the design and prototype implementation of a manageable WLAN Access Point (mAP). mAP has been developed for managing WLAN Quality of Service (QoS), frequency selection, client configuration, and for collecting a wide range of management information. The prototype is implemented using a Linux platform. With the presented architecture, the mAP functionality can be easily extended by adding new management functions and automated services.

Design of a manageable WLAN Access Point

A management system for home area networks has been developed. The main design targets have been to support heterogeneous network technologies, automate the network configuration and management, and to enable application based Quality of Service support. The resulting system architecture has a five-layer functional architecture and a centralised topology with a management server. Also, the support of new proprietary management functionality has been designed for wireless access points and client terminals. A wireless LAN and Java based prototype of the management system is being implemented and its architecture presented.
