Journal ArticleDOI
Morphological and compositional shifts in an experimental bacterial community influenced by protists with contrasting feeding modes.
Karel Šimek,Jaroslav Vrba,Jakob Pernthaler,Thomas Posch,Petr Hartman,Jirí Nedoma,Roland Psenner +6 more
TL;DR: Significant cultivation-dependent shifts of the bacterial community were observed toward (gamma)-Proteobacteria and members of the Cytophaga/Flavobacterium group, which demonstrated the rather poor agreement between cultivation-based approaches and oligonucleotide probing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contrasting bacterial strategies to coexist with a flagellate predator in an experimental microbial assemblage.
TL;DR: It is concluded that bacteria in mixed assemblages can adopt at least two distinct strategies as a reaction to intense flagellate predation: to outgrow predation pressure or to develop inedible, inactive filaments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maximum growth rates and possible life strategies of different bacterioplankton groups in relation to phosphorus availability in a freshwater reservoir
Karel Šimek,Karel Šimek,Karel Horňák,Karel Horňák,Jan Jezbera,Jan Jezbera,Jiří Nedoma,Jaroslav Vrba,Jaroslav Vrba,Viera Straškrabová,Viera Straškrabová,Miroslav Macek,Miroslav Macek,John R. Dolan,Martin W. Hahn +14 more
TL;DR: Net growth rates of distinct bacterioplankton groups and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) communities in relation to phosphorus availability by analysing eight in situ manipulation experiments in the canyon-shaped Rímov reservoir are investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predator-specific enrichment of actinobacteria from a cosmopolitan freshwater clade in mixed continuous culture.
Jakob Pernthaler,Thomas Posch,Karel Šimek,Karel Šimek,Jaroslav Vrba,Annelie Pernthaler,Frank Oliver Glöckner,Ulrich Nübel,Roland Psenner,Rudolf Amann +9 more
TL;DR: The community structure of pelagic microbial assemblages can be influenced by the taxonomic composition of the predator community, albeit to different extents.
Journal ArticleDOI
Shifts in bacterial community composition associated with different microzooplankton size fractions in a eutrophic reservoir
Karel Šimek,Karel Šimek,Petra Kojecká,Petra Kojecká,Jiří Nedoma,Petr Hartman,Jaroslav Vrba,John R. Dolan +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the sudden shifts that violate the established balance between bacterial production and the protist-induced bacterial mortality led to the significant shifts in cell morphology and BCC.
