Although workplace harassment affects the lives of many employees, until recently it has been relatively ignored in the organizational psychology literature. First, the authors introduced an attribution- and reciprocity-based model that explains the link between harassment and its potential causes and consequences. The authors then conducted a meta-analysis to examine the potential antecedents and consequences of workplace harassment. As shown by the meta-analysis, both environmental and individual difference factors potentially contributed to harassment and harassment was negatively related to the well-being of both individual employees and their employing organizations. Furthermore, harassment contributed to the variance in many outcomes, even after controlling for 2 of the most commonly studied occupational stressors, role ambiguity and role conflict.

Workplace harassment from the victim's perspective: A theoretical model and meta-analysis.

We reviewed studies of the Dark Triad (DT) personality traits--Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy-and meta-analytically examined their implications for job performance and counterproductive work behavior (CWB). Relations among the DT traits and behaviors were extracted from original reports published between 1951 and 2011 of 245 independent samples (N = 43,907). We found that reductions in the quality of job performance were consistently associated with increases in Machiavellianism and psychopathy and that CWB was associated with increases in all 3 components of the DT, but that these associations were moderated by such contextual factors as authority and culture. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that the DT explains moderate amounts of the variance in counterproductivity, but not job performance. The results showed that the 3 traits are positively related to one another but are sufficiently distinctive to warrant theoretical and empirical partitioning.

A meta-analysis of the Dark Triad and work behavior: A social exchange perspective.

This publication results from on ongoing collaboration between the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education. Its goals are to determine whether it could have been known that incidents of targeted violence at schools were being planned and whether anything could have been done to prevent them from occurring. Results from the Secret Service's Exceptional Case Study Project (ECSP) are used to organize planning. This report describes the Safe School Initiative, defines "targeted" school violence, and discusses the prevalence of school violence in American schools. The methodology of this study, sources of information, and an analysis of survey responses are also discussed. Incidents of targeted school violence are characterized, including characteristics of the-attacker, conceptualization of the attack, and signaling, advancing, and resolving the attack. Implications of study findings and the use of threat assessment as a strategy to prevent school violence are presented. Appendix A lists incidents of targeted school violence by state; Appendix B lists these incidents by year; and Appendix C is a list of resources. Contact information follows the appendices. The Final Report and Findings of the Safe School Initiative: Implications for the Prevention of School Attacks in the United States

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a ­neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by the presence of both obsessions and compulsions (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), and is expressed in approximately 2–4% of children (Esser, Schmidt, & Woerner, 1990; Flament et al., 1988; Maggini et al., 2003; Thomsen 1993). On the one hand, obsessions are composed of recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, and/or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted by the individual, with the most common including thoughts of contamination and images of violence (Leonard, Ale, Freeman, Garcia, & Ng, 2005; March & Leonard, 1996; Storch et al., 2009). Compulsions, on the other hand, are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the individual feels compelled to perform (Carter & Pollock, 2000; Leonard et al., 2005; March & Leonard, 1996; Riddle et al., 1990), with the most common being excessive washing of the hands and a repetitive checking or touching of objects (Storch et al., 2009). In most cases, obsessions and compulsions are present together, and may relate in a meaningful way (e.g., obsessive thoughts about hygiene paired with compulsive hand-washing); however, neither a dual nor a meaningful presentation of obsessions and compulsions is required for a diagnosis of OCD (Carter & Pollock, 2000; Keeley, Storch, Dhungana, & Geffken, 2007). OCD is diagnosed when at least one obsession or compulsion is present and causes significant interference to the child’s life. In this context, significant interference is defined by the loss of 1 or more hours per day to an obsession or compulsion (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). In general, OCD is chronic and debilitating in its effects: without treatment only 10% of diagnosed children experience a remission; 10% experience a worsening of symptoms (and/or associated impairments) over time; and the other 80% experience a fairly stable, unremitting course (Hollander & Evers, 2004; Keeley et al., 2007).

Background: Optimism and pessimism are positive and negative expectations linked with well-being in adults. Research on the importance of optimism and pessimism in children is limited by the lack of a developmentally appropriate measure of children's expectations.



Method:  Based upon the Life Orientation Test-Revised (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994), the Youth Life Orientation Test (YLOT) is a sixteen-item self-report measure of children's optimism and pessimism.



Results:  Reliability and validity of the YLOT was found with 204 3rd–6th graders. Optimism also predicted fewer child-reported depressive symptoms and parent-reported behavior problems assessed three months later. Pessimism predicted more child-reported anxiety symptoms and parent-reported social and academic deficits.
