In addition to the often-cited advantages of using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system in plant biological research (1), Arabidopsis has many additional characteristics that make it an attractive experimental organism for studying lea d (Pb) accumulation and tolerance in plants. These include its fortuitous familial relationship to many known metal hyperaccumulators (Brassicaceae), as well as similar Pbaccumulation patterns to most other plants. Using nutrient-agar plates, hydroponic culture, and Pb-contaminated soils as growth media, we found significant variation in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes in accumulation and tolerance of Pb. In addition, we have found that Pb accumulation is not obligatorily linked with Pb tolerance, suggesti ng that different genetic factors control these two processes. We also screened ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized M2 populations and identified several Pb-accumulating mutants. Current characterization of these mutants indicates that their phenotypes are likely due to alteration of general metal ion uptake or translocation processes since these mutants also accumulate many other metals in shoots. We expect that further characterization of the ecotypes and mutants will shed light on the basic genetic and physiological underpinnings of plant-based Pb remediation. 7. Bacteria and plants might be used to enhance remediation of soil pollutants in situ. This study assessed the potential of bacteria (12 isolates), plants (16 forage grasses), and plant-bacteria associations (selected pairings) to remediate 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2CBA)-contaminated soil. Initially, grass viability was assessed in 2CBA-contaminated soil. Soil was contaminated wi th 2CBA, forage grasses were grown under growth chamber conditions for 42 or 60 d, and the 2CBA concentration in soil was determined by gas chromatography. Only five of 16 forage grasses grew in 2CBA-treated (816 mg/kg) soil. Growth of Bromus inermis had no effect on 2CBA concentration, whereas Agropyron intermedium, B. biebersteinii, A. riparum, and Elymus dauricus decreased 2CBA relative to nonplanted control soil by 32 to 42%. With the development of upstream stormwater management and rainwater reuse, it has often been considered to use green roofs to improve water quality. However, the mixed results obtained up to now show that green roof structures must be designed to reach this goal, by choosing materials which release few pollutants and are able to retain metals present in rainwater. To select pertinent substrate and drainage layers, it is first necessary to better understand their behaviours. This study aims to compare the impacts on metal content from green roofs with two drainages and three substrates. These four structures show different metal purification rates. To better understand these mechanisms, the evolution of the distribution between dissolved and particular phases has been studied and it has shown a strong ability to retain the particular phase for the majority of metals. To establish selection criteria for materials suitable for rainwater purification, initial metal contents in material, results of CaCl2 extractions and potential releases have been compared.

The technology of agromining has created a new era in the recovery of strategic metals from natural or secondary resources, including industrial wastes. During the last decades, hyperaccumulator plants have changed recognition from merely a botanical curiosity to a prospect having tangible socio-economic and environmental applications. The knowledge base for this group of plant species, with unique properties capable of surviving and thriving in toxic and stressful environments, has increased greatly during the last 20 years, thanks to thorough investigations at various scales involving several disciplines, including botany, ecology, ecophysiology, microbiology, soil science and agronomy. The processes and mechanisms that preside over the hyperaccumulation of toxic metals and metalloids in plants are now better understood. For example, the fate and biopathways of elements in plants is actively being investigated using powerful new explanatory techniques, such as synchrotron and microprobe analysis. In addition, new species having exceptional ability to accumulate metals have been discovered, thereby considerably increasing the number of known hyperaccumulators. In parallel, work conducted by agronomists and soil scientists has allowed the domestication of selected hyperaccumulator species and hence an enabling large-scale implementation of agromining. This approach promotes a new form of agriculture, which could generate income for peoples in developing countries that live on agriculturally mediocre lands, such as those derived from ultramafic bedrock. Finally, the implication of scientific knowledge in the chain, such as chemistry and chemical engineering, and the stimulation of pluri-disciplinary research programs, bring hope to the feasibility of manufacturing specialist products of high industrial interest from agromined bio-ore.

Conclusions and outlook for agromining

Hyperaccumulators have exceptional phloem translocation capability for heavy metals. This study aims at quantifying the mobility and accumulation of Ni and Co via the phloem in the model hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens. "Phloem loading capability (PLC)," which is calculated by the "Metal content in phloem sap/Metal content in leaves," was introduced to evaluate the metal phloem mobility, while "Phloem mobility value (PMV)" was used for the normalization of PLC, which sets the PLC of Sr as PMV 0 and that of Rb as 100. The results showed that the PMVs of Ni and Co were 63 and 47, respectively. And the phloem mobility of Rb, Ni, Co, and Sr could be graded as highly mobile, mobile, intermediate, and immobile accordingly. The phloem stream can supply up to 19.1% and 16.0% of the total Ni and Co accumulated in the young leaves, respectively, while for Rb and Sr, the phloem contributes to 29% and 1.4% of the total Rb or Sr, indicating phloem contribution of certain metal is directly linked with its mobility. The results of this study raise the importance of phloem translocation on metal accumulation in shoots and provide insights on the metal cycling process in hyperaccumulators.

Quantification of nickel and cobalt mobility and accumulation via the phloem in the hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens (Brassicaceae)

Agromining is a phytotechnology aiming at producing commercial metal compounds from low-grade ores thanks to hyperaccumulating plants. The fern Dichranopteris dichotoma is a rare earth element (REE) hyperaccumulator, which naturally grows on former mine tailings in China. It accumulates up to 0.35% of REEs in its aerial parts. Different hydrometallurgical processes are currently developed to recover these elements directly from the biomass or from ashes after combustion. The process presented here consists of a direct extraction by EDTA solution, followed by precipitation with acid oxalic. Optimal precipitation pH and influence of organic matter are determined by modelling and by experimental studies. The final solid contains 4.3% of REEs, with calcium as the main cationic impurity (0.45% of the precipitate). The recovery yield is similar for major REEs and is around 70%. After optimization, upscaling of the process will allow the agromining development to recover REEs from secondary resources with more environmentally friendly techniques.
