Multiple criteria analysis (MCA) is a framework for ranking or scoring the overall performance of decision options against multiple objectives. The approach has widespread and growing application in the field of water resource management. This paper reviews 113 published water management MCA studies from 34 countries. It finds that MCA is being heavily used for water policy evaluation, strategic planning and infrastructure selection. A wide range of MCA methods are being used with the fuzzy set analysis, paired comparison and outranking methods being most common. The paper also examines the motivations for adopting MCA in water management problems and considers future research directions.

Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis for Health Care Decision Making—An Introduction: Report 1 of the ISPOR MCDA Emerging Good Practices Task Force

Many real-world decisionproblems involve conflicting systems of criteria, uncertainty and imprecise information. Some also involve a group of decision makers(DMs)where a reduction of different individual preferences on a given set to a single collective preference is required. Multi-criteria decision analysis(MCDA)is a widely used decision methodology that can improve the quality of group multiple criteria decisions by making the process more explicit,rational and efficient. One family of MCDA models uses what is known as "outranking relations" to rank a set of actions. The Electre method and its derivatives are prominent outranking methods in MCDA. In this study,we propose an alternative fuzzy outranking method by extending the Electre I method to take into account the uncertain, imprecise and linguistic assessments provided by a group of DMs. The contribution of this paper is fivefold: (1)we address the gap in the Electre literature for problems involving conflicting systems of criteria,uncertainty and imprecise information;(2)we extend the Electre I method to take into account the uncertain,imprecise and linguistic assessments; (3)we define out ranking relations by pairwise comparisons and use decision graphs to determine which action is preferable,incomparable or indifferent in the fuzzy environment; (4)we show that contrary to the TOPSIS rankings,the Electre approach reveals more useful information including the incomparability among the actions;and (5)we provide a numerical example to elucidate the details of the proposed method.

On the mathematical foundations of MACBETH

A speci2c multicriteria socio-technical approach to facilitating bid evaluation processes is presented and several issues that warrant its use are discussed. On the Mathematical Foundation of MACBETH

MACBETH (measuring attractiveness by a categorical based evaluation technique) is an interactive multicriteria decision aid approach used to build a quantitative (numerical) value model, based on qualitative (nonnumerical) pairwise comparison judgments. The MACBETH value-elicitation procedure described in this article is composed of an input stage aimed at eliciting a consistent set of qualitative judgments of difference in attractiveness between options, and an output stage aimed at constructing an interval value scale from the set of judgments, which numerically measures the relative attractiveness of options for the person or group that made the judgments.
