Teaching for quality learning at university

This study investigates the effectiveness of using e-learning in teaching in tertiary institutions. In institutions of higher education, the issue of utilizing modern information and communication technologies for teaching and learning is very important. This study reviews literature and gives a scholarly background to the study by reviewing some contributions made by various researchers and institutions on the concept of e-learning, particularly its usage in teaching and learning in higher educational institutions. It unveils some views that people and institutions have shared globally on the adoption and integration of e-learning technologies in education through surveys and other observations. It looks at the meaning or definitions of e-learning as given by different researchers and the role that e-learning plays in higher educational institutions in relation to teaching and learning processes, and the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption and implemention.

The role of e-learning, the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption in Higher Education.

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of Digital storytelling (DST) on the academic achievement, critical thinking, and learning motivation of senior high school students learning English as a foreign language. The one-year study adopted a pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design involving 110 10th grade students in two English classes. The independent variable was information technology-integrated instruction (ITII) on two different levels - lecture-type ITII (comparison group) and DST (experimental group). Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, including English achievement and critical thinking scores, questionnaire responses for learning motivation, as well as recordings of student and teacher interviews for evaluating the effectiveness of DST in learning. Descriptive analysis, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and qualitative content analysis was used for evaluating the obtained data. Our findings indicate that DST participants performed significantly better than lecture-type ITII participants in terms of English achievement, critical thinking, and learning motivation. Interview results highlight the important educational value of DST, as both the instructor and students reported that DST increased students' understanding of course content, willingness to explore, and ability to think critically, factors which are important in preparing students for an ever-changing 21st century.

Digital storytelling for enhancing student academic achievement, critical thinking, and learning motivation: A year-long experimental study

This paper presents a learner-centered model for designing e-learning assignments/activities within e-learning environments. The model is based on constructivism learning theory. The model includes two categories - the learning design elements (comprised of fundamental design elements and collaborative elements) and the learning assessment elements (self-assessment, team assessment, and facilitator’s assessment). The application of the model is shown through various working examples. A factual situation using the model within an e-learning course is presented to further demonstrate the application of the model in an actual e-learning environment.

This paper explains how to apply Constructivism and Conversation theories in Blended Learning environment in order to increase learning outcomes and quality. Some scenarios of Constructivism based blended learning activities are presented in this paper. In addition, a Constructivism Based Blended Learning model for “ICT Management” course, a compulsory course in Master of Management Information Systems program at Hasselt University, is proposed. The proposed model applies and combines Constructivism and Conversation theories in Blended Learning environment, in which the student is an active maker of knowledge. In the proposed model a variety of learning activities and scenarios, differentiated for working students and regular students are applied, supported by innovative ICT tools, which facilitate applying Constructivism and Conversation theories and increase the level of communication and interaction between students; as a result, learning quality, experience and outcomes are increased effectively.

Constructivism Based Blended Learning in Higher Education

In the framework of the project Western Eastern Teachers' Education Network (WETEN) funded by the Tempus program the network of university teachers were established to share expertise on effective teaching and learning in universities. This network for pedagogical innovation in higher education brought together the experts from EU to share good practice and new teaching methods with academic staff from two eastern countries, Moldova and Ukraine. The learner centered concept was analyzed and guidelines for creating learner centered courses were developed and piloted. The concepts and some experiences in course design were also implemented by trained teachers in the developed courses within the WETEN project.
