A method for interpreting at least two consecutive gestures includes providing a sensing assembly having at least one photoreceiver and a plurality of phototransmitters, wherein each phototransmitter is positioned to emit infrared light away from the electronic device about a corresponding central transmission axis, wherein each central transmission axis is oriented in a different direction with respect to the others, and controlling emission of infrared light by each of the phototransmitters during each of a plurality of time periods. During each of the plurality of phototransmitters and for each of the plurality of time periods, a corresponding measured signal is generated which is indicative of a respective amount of infrared light which originated from that phototransmitter during that time period and was reflected by the external object prior to being received by a photoreceiver. The measured signals are evaluated to identity a first gesture, and the electronic device is controlled in response to identification of the first gesture according to a first mode of operation. A parameter of a second gesture is also determined, and the electronic device is controlled in response to the determined parameter of the second gesture according to a second mode of operation.

A display driver (809) is then configured to present the user actuation targets (1101,1102,1103) on the touch sensitive display (701) in accordance with the user actuation target arrangement (1300). This can include presenting user actuation targets (1201,1202) having a higher precedence closer to a user's finger (1206) than user actuation targets (1203,1204) having a lower precedence, or by magnifying user actuation targets (1201,1202) having a higher precedence. Precedence can be determined by most frequently selected targets, most recently selected targets, or other factors.

Menu Configuration System and Method for Display on an Electronic Device

A touch sensitive display for an electronic device includes a display (201) for presenting information to a user and at least four infrared transceivers (202,203,204,205) disposed about the display (201). The four or more infrared transceivers (202,203,204,205) can be disposed about the display (201) such that infrared light (206,207,208,209) from each of the infrared transceivers (202,203,204,205) projects across a surface (303) of the display (201). A controller (214), which is operable with the infrared transceivers (202,203,204,205), is configured to detect which of the infrared transceivers (202,203,204,205) has the most reflected signal (702). The controller (214) can then correlate this and other information with one of a plurality of user modes of operation. A control menu (802) can then be presented on the display (301) in accordance with the user mode of operation to mitigate finger blockage.
