Shape control of large lightweight mirrors with dielectric elastomer actuation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored both material survivability issues and candidate designs of adaptive structures that incorporate dielectric elastomer actuation, and showed that silicone-based actuator layers over a temperature range of -100 °C to 260 °C, suitable for most earth orbits.

Improved Barriers to Turbine Engine Fragments: Interim Report III

TL;DR: In this article, SRI solved several numerical problems associated with modeling the crimped geometry and interaction of woven yarns and developed a computational ability to design fragment barriers to mitigate the effects of uncontained engine bursts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cut Resistance of High-strength Yarns

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the cut resistance of three yarns under tension-shear loading conditions by pressing a knife blade transversely at a constant rate against a yarn gripped at its ends.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plastic flow behavior of Inconel 718 under dynamic shear loads

TL;DR: In this paper, the deformation behavior of nickel-iron alloy Inconel 718 in shear was measured at strain rates of 0.01 s − 1 and up to 3000 s −1 with a quasistatic torsion machine and a split torsional Hopkinson bar, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of composite covering on ballistic fracture damage development in ceramic plates

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the damage development in ceramics with and without composite cover during ballistic impact and find that the covered plates showed significantly more damage than the bare plates.
