The past few years have seen the publication of numerous books and articles on the origins of agriculture, but this work by MacNeish surely ranks as the most idiosyncratic of the bunch. In The Origins of Agriculture and Settled Life, MacNeish carries on in the style of his The Science of Archaeology? These two books are largely autobiographical, the former documenting the evolution of his research, this one attempting to fit global agricultural origins into the developmental rubric he began to develop in Tehuacan. Both recount his lifelong personal quest to reconstruct the texture of the past from the shreds of prehistory, but his indomitable will and seemingly boundless energy and endless excavations have not sufficed to finally lay to rest the question of how and why agriculture started. As he says at the end, \"we have reached no final conclusions.\

The Origins of Agriculture and Settled Life

Studying motives of plant management allows understanding processes that originated agriculture and current forms of traditional technology innovation. Our work analyses the role of native plants in the Ixcatec subsistence, management practices, native plants biocultural importance, and motivations influencing management decisions. Cultural and ecological importance and management complexity may differ among species according with their use value and availability. We hypothesized that decreasing risk in availability of resources underlies the main motives of management, but curiosity, aesthetic, and ethical values may also be determinant. Role of plants in subsistence strategies, forms of use and management was documented through 130 semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Free listing interviews to 38 people were used to estimate the cognitive importance of species used as food, medicine, fuel, fodder, ornament and ceremonial. Species ecological importance was evaluated through sampling vegetation in 22 points. Principal Components Analysis were performed to explore the relation between management, cultural and ecological importance and estimating the biocultural importance of native species. We recorded 627 useful plant species, 589 of them native. Livelihood strategies of households rely on agriculture, livestock and multiple use of forest resources. At least 400 species are managed, some of them involving artificial selection. Management complexity is the main factor reflecting the biocultural importance of plant species, and the weight of ecological importance and cultural value varied among use types. Management strategies aim to ensure resources availability, to have them closer, to embellish human spaces or satisfying ethical principles. Decisions about plants management are influenced by perception of risk to satisfy material needs, but immaterial principles are also important. Studying such relation is crucial for understanding past and present technological innovation processes and understand the complex process of developing biocultural legacy.

Ixcatec ethnoecology: plant management and biocultural heritage in Oaxaca, Mexico

The Neolithic Revolution narrative associates early-mid Holocene domestications with the development of agriculture that fueled the rise of late Holocene civilizations. This narrative continues to be influential, even though it has been deconstructed by archaeologists and geneticists in its homeland. To further disentangle domestication from reliance on food production systems, such as agriculture, we revisit definitions of domestication and food production systems, review the late Pleistocene–early Holocene archaeobotanical record, and quantify the use, management and domestication of Neotropical plants to provide insights about the past. Neotropical plant domestication relies on common human behaviors (selection, accumulation and caring) within agroecological systems that focus on individual plants, rather than populations—as is typical of agriculture. The early archaeobotanical record includes numerous perennial and annual species, many of which later became domesticated. Some of this evidence identifies dispersal with probable cultivation, suggesting incipient domestication by 10,000 years ago. Since the Pleistocene, more than 6500, 1206 and 6261 native plant species have been used in Mesoamerica, the Central Andes and lowland South America, respectively. At least 1555, 428 and 742 are managed outside and inside food production systems, and at least 1148, 428 and 600 are cultivated, respectively, suggesting at least incipient domestication. Full native domesticates are more numerous in Mesoamerica (251) than the Andes (124) and the lowlands (45). This synthesis reveals that domestication is more common in the Neotropics than previously recognized and started much earlier than reliance on food production systems. Hundreds of ethnic groups had, and some still have, alternative strategies that do involve domestication, although they do not rely principally on food production systems, such as agriculture.

Disentangling Domestication from Food Production Systems in the Neotropics

Identifying factors influencing plant management allows understanding how processes of domestication operate. Uncertain availability of resources is a main motivation for managing edible plants, but little is known about management motives of non-edible resources like medicinal and ceremonial plants. We hypothesized that uncertain availability of resources would be a general factor motivating their management, but other motives could operate simultaneously. Uncertainty and risk might be less important motives in medicinal than in edible plants, while for ceremonial plants, symbolic and spiritual values would be more relevant. We inventoried edible, medicinal, and ceremonial plants in Ixcatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico, and conducted in-depth studies with 20 native and naturalized species per use type; we documented their cultural importance and abundance by interviewing 25 households and sampling vegetation in 33 sites. Consumption amounts and preferences were studied through surveys and free listings with 38 interviewees. Management intensity and risk indexes were calculated through PCA and their relation analyzed through regression analyses. Canonical methods allowed identifying the main sociocultural and ecological factors influencing management of plants per use type. Nearly 64, 63, and 55% of all ceremonial, edible, and medicinal wild plants recorded, respectively, are managed in order to maintain or increase their availability, embellishing environments, and because of ethical reasons and curiosity. Management intensity was higher in edible plants under human selection and associated with risk. Management of ceremonial and medicinal plants was not associated with indexes of risk or uncertainty in their availability. Other sociocultural and ecological factors influence management intensity, the most important being reciprocal relations and abundance perception. Plant management through practices and collectively regulated strategies is strongly related to control of risk and uncertainty in edible plants, compared with medicinal and ceremonial plants, in which reciprocal interchanges, curiosity, and spiritual values are more important factors. Understanding how needs, worries, social relations, and ethical values influence management decisions is important to understand processes of constructing management strategies and how domestication could be started in the past and are operated at the present.

Sociocultural and ecological factors influencing management of edible and non-edible plants: the case of Ixcatlán, Mexico

Improving food and nutritional diversity based on the diversity of traditional plant-based foods is an important dietary strategy to address the challenges of rapidly emerging diet- and lifestyle-linked noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) of indigenous communities worldwide. Restoration of native ecosystems, revival of traditional food crop cultivation, and revival of traditional knowledge of food preparation, processing, and preservation are important steps to build dietary support strategies against an NCD epidemic of contemporary indigenous communities. Recent studies have indicated that many traditional plant-based foods of Native Americans provide a rich source of human health-relevant bioactive compounds with diverse health benefits. Based on this rationale of health benefits of traditional plant-based foods, the objective of this review is to present a state-of-the-art comprehensive framework for ecologically and culturally relevant sustainable strategies to restore and integrate the traditional plant food diversity of Native Americans to address the NCD challenges of indigenous and wider nonindigenous communities worldwide.

Food Diversity and Indigenous Food Systems to Combat Diet-Linked Chronic Diseases.

Human cultures that occupied the area currently known as Mesoamerica developed a broad repertory of technologies for managing the biotic resources and ecosystems of the surrounding areas they lived. These technologies emerged from early experiences and had long time, enough for leading to the first forms of agriculture of the New World. Mesoamerica is actually recognized as one of the regions where agriculture and domestication of plants originated, with nearly 10,000 years of antiquity. This chapter summarizes ethnobotanical, ecological, and evolutionary information documented in different regions of Mexico, combining different research approaches in order to understand the human motives for managing plant resources, and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of management of plants and ecosystems. We therefore analyse those processes involving domestication as part of general design of nature according to human needs and desires, occurring at the levels of plant population of particular species, but also at the level of ecosystems and landscapes. We pay particular attention in the analysis of plant species that in the Mesoamerican area have wild and domesticated populations and maintain reproductive interactions. These interactions allow exploring practices and natural processes intervening in conforming populations in which divergence populations guided by natural and artificial selection and other evolutionary forces are occurring. Because natural processes continually weaken the human activities, the divergence is relatively slight and we have therefore called these processes incipient domestication. We analyse the cases of traditional greens called ‘quelites’ such as Anoda cristata and Crotalaria pumila in which people distinguish favourable and unfavourable morphs and practice artificial selection resulting in the abundance of the favourable morphs in areas more intensively managed. Similarly, some examples are analysed of trees (Leucaena esculenta, Crescentia spp. Spondias purpurea, S. mombin, and Sideroxylon palmeri), agaves (Agave inaequidens and A. hookeri), and columnar cacti (Escontria chiotilla, Myrtillocactus schenckii, Pachycereus hollianus, Polaskia spp., Stenocereus spp.). In the cases studied we analysed divergence in morphology, reproduction, population genetics, and germination patterns, among other features, between wild, silvicultural managed and cultivated populations. These case studies allow demonstrating that evolutionary divergence influenced by humans occurs not only under agriculture but also under silvicultural management and we hypothesize that domestication under silvicultural systems could have leaded to the origins of agriculture.
