Normal aortic compliance allows cardiac output to be distributed throughout the cardiac cycle, resulting in lower peak blood velocity. Loss of compliance with aging, hypertension, and possibly other risk factors for atherosclerosis increases peak blood velocity, creating eddy currents in areas of changing vascular geometry, as well as creating adverse patterns of diastolic flow. In the resulting areas of low flow, increased blood viscosity creates the potential for thrombosis. Occlusive thrombi may cause death; parietal or mural thrombi may organize to form atherosclerotic plaques.

The Interplay of Aging, Aortic Stiffness and Blood Viscosity in Atherogenesis

This paper studies the effect of Uyghur sand therapy on dynamics of arterial flow of knee joints via experiments and numerical simulations. Experiments have been carried out on 30 volunteers, with their diameter and flow rate of arteries of knee joints measured before and after Uyghur sand therapy. It has been found that Uyghur sand therapy will increase the inner diameter of knee arteries and speed up the blood flow. Experimental results show that Uyghur sand therapy can help relieve obstacles in local blood flow. By choosing one volunteer for CT scanning, three-dimensional reconstruction of knee-joint arteries via MIMICS software is achieved. Calculation model is the established with numerical calculations performed by ANSYS software. According to the calculations, the blood flow of the knee arteries speeds up and the uniform distribution of velocity enlarges after Uyghur sand therapy, which further confirms the experimental results. Besides, the research also suggests that Uyghur sand therapy has stronger effect on blood flow of knee-joint arteries than the inner diameter.

Moment analysis of unsteady bi-component species (drug) transport with coupled chemical reaction in non-Newtonian blood flow

The present research investigated the role of blood viscosity on flow within a microvascular network to identify the conditions of blood flow stagnation. When the yield stress of blood was less than 0.005 Pa, there were no stagnant regions in the microvasculature. However, when the yield stress increased to 0.05 Pa, stagnant or reduced flow areas began to appear, which grew and expanded rapidly with further increase in the yield stress. Thus, the yield stress determined from blood viscosity profile of a patient can be utilized to evaluate the risk of circulatory impairment.
