A Randomized Trial of Care in a Hospital Medical Unit Especially Designed to Improve the Functional Outcomes of Acutely Ill Older Patients
TL;DR: Specific changes in the provision of acute hospital care can improve the ability of a heterogeneous group of acutely ill older patients to perform basic activities of daily living at the time of discharge from the hospital and can reduce the frequency of discharge to institutions for long-term care.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Medical Unit for the Acute Care of the Elderly
TL;DR: Nurse‐initiated guidelines contribute to prevention of functional decline and to restoration of independent patient functioning and the effectiveness of the ACE Unit is being evaluated in a randomized clinical trial.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute care for elders units produced shorter hospital stays at lower cost while maintaining patients' functional status
Deborah E. Barnes,Robert M. Palmer,Denise M. Kresevic,Richard H. Fortinsky,Jerome Kowal,Mary-Margaret Chren,C. Seth Landefeld +6 more
TL;DR: In a randomized controlled trial of elderly patients, length-of-stay was significantly shorter among those receiving care in the Acute Care for Elders Unit compared to usual care, which produced lower total inpatient costs while maintaining patients' functional abilities and not increasing hospital readmission rates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Do Acute Care for Elders Units Increase Hospital Costs? A Cost Analysis Using the Hospital Perspective
Kenneth E. Covinsky,Joseph T. King,Joseph T. King,Linda M. Quinn,Siddique R,Robert D. Palmer,Denise M. Kresevic,Denise M. Kresevic,Richard H. Fortinsky,Jerome Kowal,C S Landefeld +10 more
TL;DR: The hospital costs of caring for medical patients on a special unit designed to help older people maintain or achieve independence in self‐care activities with the costs of usual care are compared.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of ketoconazole on steroidogenesis in cultured mouse adrenal cortex tumor cells
TL;DR: The effects of the antimycotic agent ketoconazole on steroid biosynthesis in adrenal cells was investigated in monolayer cultures of functional mouse adrenal cortex tumors, finding it to be an even more potent inhibitor of 11β hydroxylation in these cultures.
