Superhydrophobic, flexible, and ultrahigh-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding papers are of paramount importance to safety and long-term service under external mechanical deformations or other harsh service environments because they fulfill the growing demand for multipurpose materials. Herein, we fabricated multifunctional papers by incorporating sputter-deposited nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) and a fluorine-containing coating onto cellulose filter papers coated with silver nanowires (AgNWs). AgNW networks with sputter-deposited NiNPs provide outstanding magnetic properties, electrical conductivity, and EMI shielding performance. At an AgNW content of 0.109 vol % and a NiNP content of 0.013 mg/cm2, the resultant papers exhibit a superior EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 88.4 dB. Additionally, the fluorine-containing coating endows the resultant papers with a high contact angle of 149.7°. Remarkably, the obtained papers still maintain a high EMI SE even after 1500 bending cycles or immersion in water, salt, or strong alkaline solutions for 2 h, indicating their outstanding mechanical robustness and chemical durability. This work opens a new window for designing and implementing ultrahigh-performance EMI shielding materials.

Superhydrophobic and Flexible Silver Nanowire-Coated Cellulose Filter Papers with Sputter-Deposited Nickel Nanoparticles for Ultrahigh Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

In the present study, we propose a new photocatalytic interface prepared by high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), and investigated for the degradation of Reactive Green 12 (RG12) as target contaminant under visible light light-emitting diodes (LEDs) illumination. The CuxO/TiO2 nanoparticulate photocatalyst was sequentially sputtered on polyester (PES). The photocatalyst formulation was optimized by investigating the effect of different parameters such as the sputtering time of CuxO, the applied current, and the deposition mode (direct current magnetron sputtering, DCMS or HiPIMS). The results showed that the fastest RG12 degradation was obtained on CuxO/TiO2 sample prepared at 40 A in HiPIMS mode. The better discoloration efficiency of 53.4% within 360 min was found in 4 mg/L of RG12 initial concentration and 0.05% Cuwt/PESwt as determined by X-ray fluorescence. All the prepared samples contained a TiO2 under-layer with 0.02% Tiwt/PESwt. By transmission electron microscopy (TEM), both layers were seen uniformly distributed on the PES fibers. The effect of the surface area to volume (dye volume) ratio (SA/V) on the photocatalytic efficiency was also investigated for the discoloration of 4 mg/L RG12. The effect of the presence of different chemicals (scavengers, oxidant or mineral pollution or salts) in the photocatalytic medium was studied. The optimization of the amount of added hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) was also investigated in detail. Both, H2O2 and K2S2O8 drastically affected the discoloration efficiency up to 7 and 6 times in reaction rate constants, respectively. Nevertheless, the presence of Cu (metallic nanoparticles) and NaCl salt inhibited the reaction rate of RG12 discoloration by about 4 and 2 times, respectively. Moreover, the systematic study of reactive oxygen species’ (ROS) contribution was also explored with the help of iso-propanol, methanol, and potassium dichromate as •OH radicals, holes (h+), and superoxide ion-scavengers, respectively. Scavenging results showed that O2− played a primary role in RG12 removal; however, •OH radicals’ and photo-generated holes’ (h+) contributions were minimal. The CuxO/TiO2 photocatalyst was found to have a good reusability and stability up to 21 cycles. Ions’ release was quantified by means of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) showing low Cu-ions’ release.

Photocatalytic Performance of CuxO/TiO2 Deposited by HiPIMS on Polyester under Visible Light LEDs: Oxidants, Ions Effect, and Reactive Oxygen Species Investigation

Textile Electronics for VR/AR Applications

Metal oxide thin films such as copper oxide, titanium dioxide, and tin dioxide deposited by magnetron sputtering technology were verified as a gas-sensitive layer in microwave-based gas sensors operated at 2.4 GHz. The developed gas sensors were tested at room temperature (23 °C) and 50% relative humidity (RH) under exposure to 0–200 ppm of selected volatile organic compounds (acetone, ethanol, and methanol) that are of high interest in industry and biomedical applications. The highest responses to acetone were obtained for CuO-based gas sensors, to ethanol for SnO2-based gas sensors, while for methanol detection both dioxides, SnO2 and TiO2, exhibited good sensitivity.

Plasma-assisted antimicrobial finishing of textiles: A review

The applications of magnetron sputtering technology on the surface coating of fabrics have attracted more and more attention from researchers. Over the past 15 years, researches on magnetron sputtering coated fabrics have been mainly focused on electromagnetic shielding, bacterial resistance, hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties and structural color etc. In this review, recent progress of the technology is discussed in detail, and the common target materials, technologies and functions and characterization of coated fabrics are summarized and analyzed. Finally, the existing problems and future prospects of this developing field are briefly proposed and discussed.

Recent Progress in Magnetron Sputtering Technology Used on Fabrics

TPU-coated polyester fabric was used as the substrate of a flexible temperature sensor and Ag nanoparticles were deposited on its surface as the temperature sensing layer by the magnetron sputtering method. The effects of sputtering powers and heat treatment on properties of the sensing layers, such as the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), linearity, hysteresis, drift, reliability, and bending resistance, were mainly studied. The results showed that the TCR (0.00234 °C−1) was the highest when sputtering power was 90 W and sputtering pressure was 0.8 Pa. The crystallinity of Ag particles would improve, as the TCR was improved to 0.00262 °C−1 under heat treatment condition at 160°. The Ag layer obtained excellent linearity, lower hysteresis and drift value, as well as good reliability and bending resistance when the sputtering power was 90 W. The flexible temperature sensor based on the coated polyester fabric improved the softness and comfortableness of sensor, which can be further applied in intelligent wearable products.
