Fibre Bragg Grating Based Strain Sensors: Review of Technology and Applications.

Pipeline leakage and corrosion are two serious threats to pipeline safety operation. Therefore, to ensure the safety operation of long-distance pipeline, it is of great significance to conduct pipeline monitoring. Since hoop strain is an effective indicator to reflect the inner pressure fluctuation and the wall thickness reduction of the pipeline, a method of monitoring leakage and corrosion simultaneously was proposed based on hoop strain measurement. In order to test the hoop strain variation, this paper introduces a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain hoop sensor. To verify the monitoring method and the performance of this FBG strain sensor, a pipeline leakage simulation experiment and corrosion simulation experiment were conducted on an actual pipeline and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe model, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the pipeline leakage and corrosion can be detected by the FBG hoop strain sensor. The FBG strain hoop sensor is a promising device in pipeline safety monitoring.

Application of FBG Based Sensor in Pipeline Safety Monitoring

Summary
A pipeline is often an important structure with very long service life. It is of great significance to monitor the corrosion level of a pipeline to ensure its safety operation. This paper aims to develop a new nondestructive method to detect the pipeline corrosion. It is assumed that the pipeline corrosion will result in a variation of the circumferential strain. The nondestructive detection method is based on a novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) hoop-strain sensor, which can accurately measure the circumferential strain of a pipeline. In this paper, the theoretical study and numerical analysis based on finite element method are detailed in our initial work. Then, tests are conducted on three steel pipes to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of this method. The results demonstrate that the FBG hoop-strain sensor has good performance in the circumferential strain measurement and is sensitive to the variation of the circumferential strain caused by different corrosion level. The FBG hoop-strain sensor is considered to be a promising device in pipeline corrosion monitoring. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Fatigue failure is a serious problem in hydraulic piping systems installed in the machinery and equipment working in harsh operational conditions. To alleviate this problem, health monitoring of pipes can be conducted by measuring and analysing vibration-induced strain. Fibre Bragg grating is considered as a promising sensing approach for dynamic load monitoring. In this article, dynamic strain measurements based on fibre Bragg grating sensors for small-bore metal pipes have been investigated. The quasi-distributed strain sensing of fibre Bragg grating sensors is introduced. Two comparison experiments were carried out under vibration and impact loads among the methods of electrical strain gauge, piezoelectric accelerometer and fibre Bragg grating sensor. Experimental results indicate that fibre Bragg grating sensor possesses an outstanding ability to resist electromagnetic interference compared with strain gauge. Dynamic strain measurement of hydraulic system pipeline using fibre Bragg grating sensors

Negative pressure wave will spread on both sides of the pipeline when a natural gas pipeline leaks, and that will make the pressure in the pipeline reduced. Then a slight deformation will happen to the diameter of pipeline, The Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain sensor which is stuck on the pipeline can detect that and send the signal to us. Based on that signal, by using signal correlation processing method, we can find whether the pipeline leakage.
