The performance and integration density of silicon integrated circuits (ICs) have progressed at an unprecedented pace in the past 60 years. While silicon ICs thrive at low-power high-performance computing, creating flexible and large-area electronics using silicon remains a challenge. On the other hand, flexible and printed electronics use intrinsically flexible materials and printing techniques to manufacture compliant and large-area electronics. Nonetheless, flexible electronics are not as efficient as silicon ICs for computation and signal communication. Flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) leverages the strengths of these two dissimilar technologies. It uses flexible and printed electronics where flexibility and scalability are required, i.e., for sensing and actuating, and silicon ICs for computation and communication purposes. Combining flexible electronics and silicon ICs yields a very powerful and versatile technology with a vast range of applications. Here, the fundamental building blocks of an FHE system, printed sensors and circuits, thinned silicon ICs, printed antennas, printed energy harvesting and storage modules, and printed displays, are discussed. Emerging application areas of FHE in wearable health, structural health, industrial, environmental, and agricultural sensing are reviewed. Overall, the recent progress, fabrication, application, and challenges, and an outlook, related to FHE are presented.

A New Frontier of Printed Electronics: Flexible Hybrid Electronics.

In recent few years, the antenna and sensor communities have witnessed a considerable integration of radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antennas and sensors because of the impetus provided by internet of things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). Such types of sensor can find potential applications in structural health monitoring (SHM) because of their passive, wireless, simple, compact size, and multimodal nature, particular in large scale infrastructures during their lifecycle. The big data from these ubiquitous sensors are expected to generate a big impact for intelligent monitoring. A remarkable number of scientific papers demonstrate the possibility that objects can be remotely tracked and intelligently monitored for their physical/chemical/mechanical properties and environment conditions. Most of the work focuses on antenna design, and significant information has been generated to demonstrate feasibilities. Further information is needed to gain deep understanding of the passive RFID antenna sensor systems in order to make them reliable and practical. Nevertheless, this information is scattered over much literature. This paper is to comprehensively summarize and clearly highlight the challenges and state-of-the-art methods of passive RFID antenna sensors and systems in terms of sensing and communication from system point of view. Future trends are also discussed. The future research and development in UK are suggested as well.

A Review of Passive RFID Tag Antenna-Based Sensors and Systems for Structural Health Monitoring Applications

Recent research trends now offer new opportunities for developing the next generations of label‐free biochemical sensors using graphene and other two‐dimensional materials. While the physics of graphene transistors operated in electrolyte is well grounded, important chemical challenges still remain to be addressed, namely the impact of the chemical functionalizations of graphene on the key electrical parameters and the sensing performances. In fact, graphene – at least ideal graphene – is highly chemically inert. The functionalizations and chemical alterations of the graphene surface – both covalently and non‐covalently – are crucial steps that define the sensitivity of graphene. The presence, reactivity, adsorption of gas and ions, proteins, DNA, cells and tissues on graphene have been successfully monitored with graphene. This review aims to unify most of the work done so far on biochemical sensing at the surface of a (chemically functionalized) graphene field‐effect transistor and the challenges that lie ahead. The authors are convinced that graphene biochemical sensors hold great promise to meet the ever‐increasing demand for sensitivity, especially looking at the recent progresses suggesting that the obstacle of Debye screening can be overcome.

Sensing at the Surface of Graphene Field-Effect Transistors

Printed electronics offer a breakthrough in the penetration of information technology into everyday life. The possibility of printing electronic circuits will further promote the spread of the Internet of Things applications. Inks based on graphene have a chance to dominate this technology, as they potentially can be low cost and applied directly on materials like textile and paper. Here we report the environmentally sustainable route of production of graphene ink suitable for screen-printing technology. The use of non-toxic solvent Dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) significantly speeds up and reduces the cost of the liquid phase exfoliation of graphite. Printing with our ink results in very high conductivity (7.13 × 104 S m−1) devices, which allows us to produce wireless connectivity antenna operational from MHz to tens of GHz, which can be used for wireless data communication and energy harvesting, which brings us very close to the ubiquitous use of printed graphene technology for such applications. Printed conductive inks show promise for future electronic device applications. Here, the authors report synthesis of graphene inks with conductivity of 7.13 × 10^4 S/m by Cyrene assisted liquid phase exfoliation, and their applications in data communication and RF energy harvesting.

Sustainable production of highly conductive multilayer graphene ink for wireless connectivity and IoT applications.

Graphene‐based textiles show promise for next‐generation wearable electronic applications due to their advantages over metal‐based technologies. However, current reduced graphene oxide (rGO)‐based electronic textiles (e‐textiles) suffer from poor electrical conductivity and higher power consumption. Here, highly conductive, ultraflexible, and machine washable graphene‐based wearable e‐textiles are reported. A simple and scalable pad−dry−cure method with subsequent roller compression and a fine encapsulation of graphene flakes is used. The graphene‐based wearable e‐textiles thus produced provide lowest sheet resistance (≈11.9 Ω sq−1) ever reported on graphene e‐textiles, and highly conductive even after 10 home laundry washing cycles. Moreover, it exhibits extremely high flexibility, bendability, and compressibility as it shows repeatable response in both forward and backward directions before and after home laundry washing cycles. The scalability and multifunctional applications of such highly conductive graphene‐based wearable e‐textiles are demonstrated as ultraflexible supercapacitor and skin‐mounted strain sensors.

Highly conductive, scalable, and machine washable graphene-based e-textiles for multifunctional wearable electronic applications

In this paper, we report highly conductive, highly flexible, light weight and low cost printed graphene for wireless wearable communications applications As a proof of concept, printed graphene enabled transmission lines and antennas on paper substrates were designed, fabricated and characterized To explore its potentials in wearable communications applications, mechanically flexible transmission lines and antennas under various bended cases were experimentally studied The measurement results demonstrate that the printed graphene can be used for RF signal transmitting, radiating and receiving, which represents some of the essential functionalities of RF signal processing in wireless wearable communications systems Furthermore, the printed graphene can be processed at low temperature so that it is compatible with heat-sensitive flexible materials like papers and textiles This work brings a step closer to the prospect to implement graphene enabled low cost and environmentally friendly wireless wearable communications systems in the near future

Highly Flexible and Conductive Printed Graphene for Wireless Wearable Communications Applications

In this letter, a graphene nanoflakes printed antenna is presented Graphene nanoflakes conductive ink has been screen-printed on paper substrate and compressed to achieve the conductivity of $\text{043} \times {\text{10}^{\text{5}}} \hbox{\,S/m}$  Low-profile meandered-line dipole antenna has been fabricated as a proof of concept due to its electrically small size and simple structure The maximum gain is measured to be ${-}\hbox{4 dBi}$ , the ${-} \hbox{10-dB}$ bandwidth ranges from 984 to 1052 MHz (667%), and the radiation pattern is verified as being typical radiation patterns of a dipole-type antenna The radiation efficiency is 32% The measurement results reveal that graphene nanoflakes printed antenna can provide practically acceptable return loss, gain, bandwidth, and radiation patterns for mid- and short-range RFID, and sensing applications Furthermore, screen-printing technique employed in this work is of extremely low cost and capable of producing antennas in mass production

Graphene Nanoflakes Printed Flexible Meandered-Line Dipole Antenna on Paper Substrate for Low-Cost RFID and Sensing Applications

A printed radio frequency sensor structure contains: a substrate, a RF antenna arranged on a top surface of the substrate, and a protection layer covering on the RF antenna arranged, wherein plural sensing materials are directly introduced into a RF antenna mixture of the RF antenna. A method of preparing a RFID sensor tag comprising steps of: A). Printing conductive sensing ink/glue on substrate; B. Drying, curing and compressing the conductive sensing ink/glue to form a conductive antenna mixture with plural sensing materials; C). Bonding a chip on a RFID sensing antenna to form a RFID sensor tag; and D). Coating a protection layer on a top of the RFID sensor tag. Here note protection coating can fully, partially or no cover the conductive sensing antenna.
