Graphene and Graphene Oxide: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

Electrochemical energy storage technology is based on devices capable of exhibiting high energy density (batteries) or high power density (electrochemical capacitors). There is a growing need, for current and near-future applications, where both high energy and high power densities are required in the same material. Pseudocapacitance, a faradaic process involving surface or near surface redox reactions, offers a means of achieving high energy density at high charge–discharge rates. Here, we focus on the pseudocapacitive properties of transition metal oxides. First, we introduce pseudocapacitance and describe its electrochemical features. Then, we review the most relevant pseudocapacitive materials in aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes. The major challenges for pseudocapacitive materials along with a future outlook are detailed at the end.

Pseudocapacitive oxide materials for high-rate electrochemical energy storage

Every few years, a new material with unique properties emerges and fascinates the scientific community, typical recent examples being high-temperature superconductors and carbon nanotubes. Graphene is the latest sensation with unusual properties, such as half-integer quantum Hall effect and ballistic electron transport. This two-dimensional material which is the parent of all graphitic carbon forms is strictly expected to comprise a single layer, but there is considerable interest in investigating two-layer and few-layer graphenes as well. Synthesis and characterization of graphenes pose challenges, but there has been considerable progress in the last year or so. Herein, we present the status of graphene research which includes aspects related to synthesis, characterization, structure, and properties.

Graphene: The New Two-Dimensional Nanomaterial

Graphene has attracted tremendous research interest in recent years, owing to its exceptional properties. The scaled-up and reliable production of graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), offers a wide range of possibilities to synthesize graphene-based functional materials for various applications. This critical review presents and discusses the current development of graphene-based composites. After introduction of the synthesis methods for graphene and its derivatives as well as their properties, we focus on the description of various methods to synthesize graphene-based composites, especially those with functional polymers and inorganic nanostructures. Particular emphasis is placed on strategies for the optimization of composite properties. Lastly, the advantages of graphene-based composites in applications such as the Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalysis, as well as Raman enhancement are described (279 references).

Flexible polymer OLEDs employing a transparent polymer composite electrode have been fabricated by solution-based processing. The flexible OLEDs exhibit both higher efficiency and high mechanical flexibility including being stretchable by 50% strain.

High-Efficiency Flexible Polymer OLEDs

It remains a challenge to artificially fabricate fibers with the macroscopic mechanical properties and characteristics of spider silk. Herein, a covalently cross-linked double-network strategy was proposed to disrupt the inverse relation of strength and toughness in the fabrication of ultratough and superstrong artificial polymer fibers. Our design utilized a strong fishnet-like structure based on immovable cellulose nanocrystal cross-links to mimic the function of the β-sheet nanocrystallites and a slidable mechanically interlocked network based on polyrotaxane to imitate the dissipative stick-slip motion of the β-strands in spider silk. The resultant fiber exhibited superior mechanical properties, including gigapascal tensile strength, a ductility of over 60%, and a toughness exceeding 420 MJ/m3. The fibers also showed robust biological functions similar to those of spider silks, demonstrating mechanical enhancement, energy absorption ability, and shape memory. A composite with our artificial fibers as reinforcing fibers exhibited remarkable tear and fatigue resistance.
