Inspired by the unique and efficient wound healing processes in biological systems, several approaches to develop synthetic polymers that can repair themselves with complete, or nearly complete, autonomy have recently been developed. This review aims to survey the rapidly expanding field of self-healing polymers by reviewing the major successful autonomic repairing mechanisms developed over the last decade. Additionally, we discuss several issues related to transferring these self-healing technologies from the laboratory to real applications, such as virgin polymer property changes as a result of the added healing functionality, healing in thin films v. bulk polymers, and healing in the presence of structural reinforcements.

Self-healing polymers and composites

Various types of solid–liquid phase change materials (PCMs) have been reviewed for thermal energy storage applications. The review has shown that organic solid–liquid PCMs have much more advantages and capabilities than inorganic PCMs but do possess low thermal conductivity and density as well as being flammable. Inorganic PCMs possess higher heat storage capacities and conductivities, cheaper and readily available as well as being non-flammable, but do experience supercooling and phase segregation problems during phase change process. The review has also shown that eutectic PCMs have unique advantage since their melting points can be adjusted. In addition, they have relatively high thermal conductivity and density but they possess low latent and specific heat capacities. Encapsulation technologies and shell materials have also been examined and limitations established. The morphology of particles was identified as a key influencing factor on the thermal and chemical stability and the mechanical strength of encapsulated PCMs. In general, in-situ polymerization method appears to offer the best technological approach in terms of encapsulation efficiency and structural integrity of core material. There is however the need for the development of enhancement methods and standardization of testing procedures for microencapsulated PCMs.

Review of solid–liquid phase change materials and their encapsulation technologies

Stimuli-responsive capsules are of interest in drug delivery, fragrance release, food preservation, and self-healing materials. Many methods are used to trigger the release of encapsulated contents. Here we highlight mechanisms for the controlled release of encapsulated cargo that utilize chemical reactions occurring in solid polymeric shell walls. Triggering mechanisms responsible for covalent bond cleavage that result in the release of capsule contents include chemical, biological, light, thermal, magnetic, and electrical stimuli. We present methods for encapsulation and release, triggering methods, and mechanisms and conclude with our opinions on interesting obstacles for chemically induced activation with relevance for controlled release.

Self-healing polymeric materials based on microencapsulated healing agents: From design to preparation

Thermal energy storage is at the height of its popularity to harvest, store, and save energy for short-term or long-term use in new energy generation systems. It is forecasted that the global thermal energy storage market for 2015–2019 will cross US$1,300 million in revenue, where the highest growth is expected to be in Europe, Middle East, and Africa followed by Asia-Pacific region. Thermal energy storage has become an inevitable component of fluctuant renewable energy systems due to their significant role in increasing efficiency and Quality of Service (QoS). Currently, one major research stream in such systems is improving the efficiency of heat exchangers and heat carriers. Hence, studying thermal behavior and thermophysical properties of heat storages is of great importance. In this study, we review a common but not very well-known problem of supercooling of Phase Change Materials (PCM). Supercooling is a thermophysical property of PCMs that is problematic in thermal storage applications. This review looks at supercooling from another point of view and investigates applications (such as specialized thermal storage applications) that can put supercooling into operation. To achieve this, development of techniques to increase state stability and designing reliable and stable supercooled heat storage systems will be investigated. The study will look at the thermal energy storage of supercooled liquids, degree and measurement of supercooling. Furthermore, factors that influence degree of supercooling and their effect on output capacity will be discussed. It looks at the supercooled material in four major categories and looks into the mechanisms for triggering crystallization in supercooled liquids. Applications including solar thermal storage will be the discussed in details. From the results discussed in this review researchers will identify and gain insight into supercooling control techniques, which are necessary for developing efficient heat exchangers, and also essential for promoting adoption of sustainable renewable energies.
