Nowadays, society is growing and crowded, the construction of automatic smart waste sorter machine utilizing the intelligent sensors is important and necessary. To build this system, trash classification from trash images is an important issue in computer vision to be addressed for integrating into sensors. Therefore, this study proposes a robust model using deep neural networks to classify trash automatically which can be applied in smart waste sorter machines. Firstly, we collect the VN-trash dataset that consists of 5904 images belonging to three different classes including Organic, Inorganic and Medical wastes from Vietnam. Next, this study develops a deep neural network model for trash classification named DNN-TC which is an improvement of ResNext model to improve the predictive performance. Finally, the experiments are conducted to compare the performances of DNN-TC and the state-of-the-art methods for trash classification on VN-trash dataset as well as Trashnet dataset to show the effectiveness of the proposed model. The experimental results indicate that DNN-TC yields 94% and 98% in terms of accuracy for Trashnet and VN-trash datasets respectively and thus it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for trash classification on both experimental datasets.

A Novel Framework for Trash Classification Using Deep Transfer Learning

Classical univariate and multivariate statistics are the most common methods used for data analysis in plant breeding and biotechnology studies. Evaluation of genetic diversity, classification of plant genotypes, analysis of yield components, yield stability analysis, assessment of biotic and abiotic stresses, prediction of parental combinations in hybrid breeding programs, and analysis of in vitro-based biotechnological experiments are mainly performed by classical statistical methods. Despite successful applications, these classical statistical methods have low efficiency in analyzing data obtained from plant studies, as the genotype, environment, and their interaction (G × E) result in nondeterministic and nonlinear nature of plant characteristics. Large-scale data flow, including phenomics, metabolomics, genomics, and big data, must be analyzed for efficient interpretation of results affected by G × E. Nonlinear nonparametric machine learning techniques are more efficient than classical statistical models in handling large amounts of complex and nondeterministic information with “multiple-independent variables versus multiple-dependent variables” nature. Neural networks, partial least square regression, random forest, and support vector machines are some of the most fascinating machine learning models that have been widely applied to analyze nonlinear and complex data in both classical plant breeding and in vitro-based biotechnological studies. High interpretive power of machine learning algorithms has made them popular in the analysis of plant complex multifactorial characteristics. The classification of different plant genotypes with morphological and molecular markers, modeling and predicting important quantitative characteristics of plants, the interpretation of complex and nonlinear relationships of plant characteristics, and predicting and optimizing of in vitro breeding methods are the examples of applications of machine learning in conventional plant breeding and in vitro-based biotechnological studies. Precision agriculture is possible through accurate measurement of plant characteristics using imaging techniques and then efficient analysis of reliable extracted data using machine learning algorithms. Perfect interpretation of high-throughput phenotyping data is applicable through coupled machine learning-image processing. Some applied and potentially applicable capabilities of machine learning techniques in conventional and in vitro-based plant breeding studies have been discussed in this overview. Discussions are of great value for future studies and could inspire researchers to apply machine learning in new layers of plant breeding.

Assessment for crop water stress with infrared thermal imagery in precision agriculture: A review and future prospects for deep learning applications

The identification of water stress is a major challenge for timely and effective irrigation to ensure global food security and sustainable agriculture. Several direct and indirect methods exist for identification of crop water stress, but they are time consuming, tedious and require highly sophisticated sensors or equipment. Image processing is one of the techniques which can help in the assessment of water stress directly. Machine learning techniques combined with image processing can aid in identifying water stress beyond the limitations of traditional image processing. Deep learning (DL) techniques have gained momentum recently for image classification and the convolutional neural network based on DL is being applied widely. In present study, comparative assessment of three DL models: AlexNet, GoogLeNet and Inception V3 are applied for identification of water stress in maize (Zea mays), okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) and soybean (Glycine max) crops. A total of 1200 digital images were acquired for each crop to form the input dataset for the deep learning models. Among the three models, performance of GoogLeNet was found to be superior with an accuracy of 98.3, 97.5 and 94.1% for maize, okra and soybean, respectively. The onset of convergence in GoogLeNet models commenced after 8 epochs with 22 (maize), 31 (okra) and 15 (soybean) iterations per epoch with error rate of less than 7.5%.

Identifying crop water stress using deep learning models

Plant stress is one of major issues that cause significant economic loss for growers. The labor-intensive conventional methods for identifying the stressed plants constrain their applications. To address this issue, rapid methods are in urgent needs. Developments of advanced sensing and machine learning techniques trigger revolutions for precision agriculture based on deep learning and big data. In this paper, we reviewed the latest deep learning approaches pertinent to the image analysis of crop stress diagnosis. We compiled the current sensor tools and deep learning principles involved in plant stress phenotyping. In addition, we reviewed a variety of deep learning applications/functions with plant stress imaging, including classification, object detection, and segmentation, of which are closely intertwined. Furthermore, we summarized and discussed the current challenges and future development avenues in plant phenotyping.

Deep Learning Application in Plant Stress Imaging: A Review

Drought stress seriously affects crop growth, development, and grain production. Existing machine learning methods have achieved great progress in drought stress detection and diagnosis. However, such methods are based on a hand-crafted feature extraction process, and the accuracy has much room to improve. In this paper, we propose the use of a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to identify and classify maize drought stress. Field drought stress experiments were conducted in 2014. The experiment was divided into three treatments: optimum moisture, light drought, and moderate drought stress. Maize images were obtained every two hours throughout the whole day by digital cameras. In order to compare the accuracy of DCNN, a comparative experiment was conducted using traditional machine learning on the same dataset. The experimental results demonstrated an impressive performance of the proposed method. For the total dataset, the accuracy of the identification and classification of drought stress was 98.14% and 95.95%, respectively. High accuracy was also achieved on the sub-datasets of the seedling and jointing stages. The identification and classification accuracy levels of the color images were higher than those of the gray images. Furthermore, the comparison experiments on the same dataset demonstrated that DCNN achieved a better performance than the traditional machine learning method (Gradient Boosting Decision Tree GBDT). Overall, our proposed deep learning-based approach is a very promising method for field maize drought identification and classification based on digital images.
