Review of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Applications in Forensic Science.

Inkjet printing has been widely used in functional material patterning for fabrication of optical/electrical devices. The depositing morphologies of inkjet droplets are critical to the resolution and performance of resulted functional patterns. This review summarizes various strategies to control the depositing morphologies of inkjet droplets, including suppressing and utilizing coffee-ring effect, employing liquid substrates, developing patterned substrates and controlling droplets coalescence. Moreover, the remaining challenges in controlling inkjet droplets are presented, and the broad research and application prospects of controlling nanomaterial patterning by inkjet printing are proposed.

Recent Advances in Controlling the Depositing Morphologies of Inkjet Droplets

Environmental pollution, a major problem worldwide, poses considerable threat to human health and ecological environment Efficient and reliable detection technologies, which focus on the appearance of emerging environmental and trace pollutants, are urgently needed Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has become an attractive analytical tool for sensing trace targets in environmental field because of its inherent molecular fingerprint specificity and high sensitivity In this review, we focused on the recent developments in the integration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with SERS for facilitating sensitive detection of environmental pollutants An overview and classification of different types of MNPs for SERS detection were initially provided, enabling us to categorize the huge amount of literature that was available in the interdisciplinary research field of MNPs based SERS technology Then, the basic working principles and applications of MNPs in SERS detection were presented Subsequently, the detection technologies integrating MNPs with SERS that eventually were used for the detection of various environmental pollutions were reviewed Finally, the advantages of MNP-basedSERS detection technology for environmental pollutants were concluded, and the current challenges and future outlook of this technology in practical applications were highlighted The application of the MNPs-basedSERS techniques for environmental analysis will be significantly advanced with the great progresses of the nanotechnologies, optics, and materials

Applications of magnetic nanoparticles in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of environmental pollutants.

A structure consisting of a low surface energy substrate and low surface tension liquid is designed and prepared by taking advantage of perfluorinated fluid infusion into the porous Teflon membrane. This slippery platform allows efficient enrichment and self-assembly of hybrid nanoparticles and the assembled structure can be detached from the membrane. A macroscale superlattice array of Au nanorods doped with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles is obtained by suppressing the outward capillary flow and coffee-ring effect during evaporative self-assembly. In SERS (surface enhanced Raman scattering) detection of environmental pollutants including thiram, diquat and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the removable plasmonic superlattice array with magnetic properties enables rapid separation of analytes from the solution resulting in excellent sensitivity and detection limits down to the nanomolar level. Efficient Enrichment and Self-Assembly of Hybrid Nanoparticles into Removable and Magnetic SERS Substrates for Sensitive Detection of Environmental Pollutants

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis of environmental hydrophobic pollutants without chemical functionalization of a bare nanoparticle (NP) substrate presents a challenge. The motivation for our study is to develop a highly reproducible and robust portable SERS sensor for detection and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using bare Au NPs. Our hypothesis is that the coffee ring effect could separate PAHs from the bulk solution and concentrate them on the closely packed Au NP ring, consequently enhancing their Raman scattering. This premise was confirmed with the commonly used citrate-reduced Au NPs in 20 nm, having no structural uniqueness. Because of the coffee ring effect, however, closely packed but not aggregated Au NP arrays were formed and, consequently, facilitated the separation and concentration of hydrophobic PAHs. As a result, a prominent SERS enhancement can be obtained on the ring because of the electromagnetic mechanism. A mixture of six PAHs with different numbers of benzene rings, namely, naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene, and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, could be readily identified in river water. This portable SERS sensor based on the coffee ring effect provides a robust and versatile approach in PAH detection without the need for stringent structural requirements for Au NPs.
