In recent years there have been many papers that considered the effects of material length scales in the study of mechanics of solids at micro- and/or nano-scales There are a number of approaches and, among them, one set of papers deals with Eringen's differential nonlocal model and another deals with the strain gradient theories The modified couple stress theory, which also accounts for a material length scale, is a form of a strain gradient theory The large body of literature that has come into existence in the last several years has created significant confusion among researchers about the length scales that these various theories contain The present paper has the objective of establishing the fact that the length scales present in nonlocal elasticity and strain gradient theory describe two entirely different physical characteristics of materials and structures at nanoscale By using two principle kernel functions, the paper further presents a theory with application examples which relates the classical nonlocal elasticity and strain gradient theory and it results in a higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory In this theory, a higher-order nonlocal strain gradient elasticity system which considers higher-order stress gradients and strain gradient nonlocality is proposed It is based on the nonlocal effects of the strain field and first gradient strain field This theory intends to generalize the classical nonlocal elasticity theory by introducing a higher-order strain tensor with nonlocality into the stored energy function The theory is distinctive because the classical nonlocal stress theory does not include nonlocality of higher-order stresses while the common strain gradient theory only considers local higher-order strain gradients without nonlocal effects in a global sense By establishing the constitutive relation within the thermodynamic framework, the governing equations of equilibrium and all boundary conditions are derived via the variational approach Two additional kinds of parameters, the higher-order nonlocal parameters and the nonlocal gradient length coefficients are introduced to account for the size-dependent characteristics of nonlocal gradient materials at nanoscale To illustrate its application values, the theory is applied for wave propagation in a nonlocal strain gradient system and the new dispersion relations derived are presented through examples for wave propagating in Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko nanobeams The numerical results based on the new nonlocal strain gradient theory reveal some new findings with respect to lattice dynamics and wave propagation experiment that could not be matched by both the classical nonlocal stress model and the contemporary strain gradient theory Thus, this higher-order nonlocal strain gradient model provides an explanation to some observations in the classical and nonlocal stress theories as well as the strain gradient theory in these aspects

A higher-order nonlocal elasticity and strain gradient theory and its applications in wave propagation

A microstructure-dependent Timoshenko beam model is developed using a variational formulation. It is based on a modified couple stress theory and Hamilton's principle. The new model contains a material length scale parameter and can capture the size effect, unlike the classical Timoshenko beam theory. Moreover, both bending and axial deformations are considered, and the Poisson effect is incorporated in the current model, which differ from existing Timoshenko beam models. The newly developed non-classical beam model recovers the classical Timoshenko beam model when the material length scale parameter and Poisson's ratio are both set to be zero. In addition, the current Timoshenko beam model reduces to a microstructure-dependent Bernoulli–Euler beam model when the normality assumption is reinstated, which also incorporates the Poisson effect and can be further reduced to the classical Bernoulli–Euler beam model. To illustrate the new Timoshenko beam model, the static bending and free vibration problems of a simply supported beam are solved by directly applying the formulas derived. The numerical results for the static bending problem reveal that both the deflection and rotation of the simply supported beam predicted by the new model are smaller than those predicted by the classical Timoshenko beam model. Also, the differences in both the deflection and rotation predicted by the two models are very large when the beam thickness is small, but they are diminishing with the increase of the beam thickness. Similar trends are observed for the free vibration problem, where it is shown that the natural frequency predicted by the new model is higher than that by the classical model, with the difference between them being significantly large only for very thin beams. These predicted trends of the size effect in beam bending at the micron scale agree with those observed experimentally. Finally, the Poisson effect on the beam deflection, rotation and natural frequency is found to be significant, which is especially true when the classical Timoshenko beam model is used. This indicates that the assumption of Poisson's effect being negligible, which is commonly used in existing beam theories, is inadequate and should be individually verified or simply abandoned in order to obtain more accurate and reliable results.

A microstructure-dependent Timoshenko beam model based on a modified couple stress theory

A new model for the bending of a Bernoulli–Euler beam is developed using a modified couple stress theory. A variational formulation based on the principle of minimum total potential energy is employed. The new model contains an internal material length scale parameter and can capture the size effect, unlike the classical Bernoulli–Euler beam model. The former reduces to the latter in the absence of the material length scale parameter. As a direct application of the new model, a cantilever beam problem is solved. It is found that the bending rigidity of the cantilever beam predicted by the newly developed model is larger than that predicted by the classical beam model. The difference between the deflections predicted by the two models is very significant when the beam thickness is small, but is diminishing with the increase of the beam thickness. A comparison shows that the predicted size effect agrees fairly well with that observed experimentally.

Bernoulli–Euler beam model based on a modified couple stress theory

This work examines the effect of microstructure upon microcantilever bending stiffness. An existing beam theory model, based upon an isotropic Hooke's law constitutive relationship, is compared to a model based upon a micropolar elasticity constitutive model. The micropolar approach introduces a bending stiffness relation which is a function of any two independent elastic constants of the Hooke's law model (e.g., the elastic modulus and the Poisson's ratio), and an additional material constant (called γ). A consequence of the additional material constant is the prediction of an increased bending stiffness as the cantilever thickness decreases—a stiffening due to the material microstructure which becomes measurable at micron-order thicknesses. Polypropylene microcantilevers, which have a non-homogeneous microstructure due to their semi-crystalline nature, were fabricated via injection molding. A nanoindenter was used to measure their stiffness. The nanoindenter-determined stiffness values, which include the effect of the additional micropolar material constant, are compared to stiffness values obtained from beam theory. The nanoindenter stiffness values are seen to be at least four times larger than the beam theory stiffness predictions. This stiffening effect has relevance in future MEMS applications which employ materials with non-homogeneous microstructures instead of the conventional MEMS materials (e.g., silicon, silicon nitride), which have a very uniform microstructure.

Gradient elasticity in statics and dynamics: An overview of formulations, length scale identification procedures, finite element implementations and new results

Conventional strain-based mechanics theory does not account for contributions from strain gradients. Failure to include strain gradient contributions can lead to underestimates of stresses and size-dependent behaviors in small-scale structures. In this paper, a new set of higher-order metrics is developed to characterize strain gradient behaviors. This set enables the application of the higher-order equilibrium conditions to strain gradient elasticity theory and reduces the number of independent elastic length scale parameters from five to three. On the basis of this new strain gradient theory, a strain gradient elastic bending theory for plane-strain beams is developed. Solutions for cantilever bending with a moment and line force applied at the free end are constructed based on the new higher-order bending theory. In classical bending theory, the normalized bending rigidity is independent of the length and thickness of the beam. In the solutions developed from the higher-order bending theory, the normalized higher-order bending rigidity has a new dependence on the thickness of the beam and on a higher-order bending parameter, bh. To determine the significance of the size dependence, we fabricated micron-sized beams and conducted bending tests using a nanoindenter. We found that the normalized beam rigidity exhibited an inverse squared dependence on the beam's thickness as predicted by the strain gradient elastic bending theory, and that the higher-order bending parameter, bh, is on the micron-scale. Potential errors from the experiments, model and fabrication were estimated and determined to be small relative to the observed increase in beam's bending rigidity. The present results indicate that the elastic strain gradient effect is significant in elastic deformation of small-scale structures.
