TL;DR: In this article, the final states with charged kaons in three-prong τ decays are studied by exploiting the particle identification from the dE/dx measurement, based on a sample of about 1.6 × 105 detected τ pairs collected with the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1995 around the Z peak.
Abstract: Final states with charged kaons in three-prong τ decays are studied by exploiting the particle identification from the dE/dx measurement. The results are based on a sample of about 1.6 × 105 detected τ pairs collected with the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1995 around the Z peak. The following branching ratios have been measured: B(τ- → K−K+π−ντ) = (1.63 ± 0.21 ± 0.17) × 10−3, B(τ− → K−π+π−ντ) = (2.14 ± 0.37 ± 0.29) × 10−3, B(τ− → K−K+π−π0ντ) = (0.75 ± 0.29 ± 0.15) × 10−3, and B(τ− → K−π+π−π0ντ) = (0.61 ± 0.39 ± 0.18) × 10−3. The first two measurements are more precise than the current world averages, while the last two channels are investigated for the first time. The 95% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay τ− → K−K+K−ντ is 0.19 × 10−3. A study of intermediate states occurring in the K−K+π−ντ and K−π+π−ντ decays is also presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, a lower bound on the mass of the lightest ch is established for chargino and neutralino production at center-of-mass energies of 161, 170, and 172 GeV.
Abstract: The data recorded by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170, and 172 GeV are analysed for signals of chargino and neutralino production. No evidence of a signal is found, although candidate events consistent with the expectations from Standard Model processes are observed. Limits at 95% C.L. on the production cross sections are derived and bounds on the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are set. The lower limit on the mass of the lightest ch is 85.5 \({\mathrm{GeV}/c^{\mathrm 2}}\) for gaugino-like charginos (\(\mu = -500 {\mathrm{GeV}/c^{\mathrm 2}}\)), and 85.0 \({\mathrm{GeV}/c^{\mathrm 2}}\) for Higgsino-like charginos (\( M_{2} = 500 {\mathrm{GeV}/c^{\mathrm 2}}\)), for heavy sneutrinos (\(M_{\tilde u} \geq 200 {\mathrm{GeV}/c^{\mathrm 2}}\)) and \({\tan\beta} = \sqrt{2}\). The effect of light sleptons on chargino and neutralino limits is investigated. The assumptions of a universal slepton mass and a universal gaugino mass are relaxed, allowing less model-dependent limits to be obtained.

TL;DR: The down-regulation of renal PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA occurs much earlier than the changes of renal function, plasma PTH, serum phosphorus and calcium in the course of human renal disease.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the down-regulation of renal parathyroid hormone/parathyroid hormone related protein (PTH/PTHrP) receptor messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression is a general phenomenon in patients with different stages of renal disease, besides chronic renal failure. METHODS Twenty-five patients were divided into the following groups: (1) chronic glomerulonephritis with normal renal function (GNN) (2) chronic glomerulonephritis with moderate renal insufficiency (GNI) (3) severe chronic renal failure undergoing maintenance dialysis (CRF) (4) acute renal failure during oliguric phase (ARF) (5) normal control without renal suffering (NC). Using relatively quantitative reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction (RT/PCR) method, we investigated PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA expression in renal specimens obtained through biopsy or operation. The levels of plasma C-terminal PTH, serum phosphorus and calcium were also observed at the same time. RESULTS Plasma C-terminal PTH levels in GNI, CRF and ARF patients were 1.90, 9.73 and 8.63 times higher than those in NC. However, the difference between GNN and NC was insignificant. CRF and ARF patients also presented obviously elevated serum phosphorus (1.61, 1.86 vs 1.14 mmol/L) and reduced serum calcium (1.82, 1.71 vs 2.26 mmol/L) compared with that in the control. These two parameters for GNN and GNI patients were normal. The levels of PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA (corrected by beta-actin mRNA) in the kidney of GNN, GNI, CRF and ARF patients was markedly decreased by up to 35.7%, 68.5%, 77.9% and 92.2%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The down-regulation of renal PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA occurs much earlier than the changes of renal function, plasma PTH, serum phosphorus and calcium in the course of human renal disease.

TL;DR: The injection of donor's splenic lymphocytes before transplantation could significantly prolong the survival time of the heterotopically transplanted heart and the combined use of the above-mentioned two methods acted on both the host and the donor, resulting in synergistic effect in inducing immune tolerance in adult rabbits, and resulting in relatively long-term survival of transplanted hearts.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To induce experimental immune tolerance in rabbits and observe its effects on heterotopic cardiac transplantation. METHODS Donor's splenic lymphocytes pretreated with platinum metal chelator were injected into the recipient's mesenteric-portal vein. Cyclosporin A was perfused through the donor's heart. RESULTS The injection of donor's splenic lymphocytes before transplantation could significantly prolong the survival time of the heterotopically transplanted heart. The effect of two injections was better than that of one. Radioactive tracer studies showed that the 99mTc-HMPAO tagged lymphocytes injected into the recipient rabbit were later concentrated in the liver, though initially they were distributed in multiple organs. The induced immune tolerance was antigen-specific, and it neither affect the other immune functions of the lymphatic system prominently nor exert any harmful effect on the recipient's liver and renal functions. The perfusion of cyclosporin A through the donor heart could block the glycosyl groups, such as D-glucose, D-mannose or N-acetyl-galactosamine on the surface of the myocardial cells, thus might change the antigenic expression, effectively preventing rejection of the graft by the host, and might be considered as a new method to block graft rejection in cardiac transplantation. The combined use of the above-mentioned two methods acted on both the host and the donor, thus reducing the exposed antigens on the donor organ as well as the immune reaction against the donor antigens, and resulting in synergistic effect in inducing immune tolerance in adult rabbits, and resulting in relatively long-term survival of transplanted hearts. CONCLUSION This report may provide the experimental basis for inducing immune tolerance in clinical transplantation.
