This chapter reviews the use of high-pressure ( P ) and -temperature ( T ) techniques to prepare and study inorganic materials including minerals, dense solid-state elements and compounds, framework materials, and liquids and glasses in various polymorphic forms. The chapter focuses mainly on high- P , T solid-state chemistry and materials synthesis experiments carried out using diamond anvil cells and large-volume apparatus along with some results from shock experiments and predictions of new compounds and structural behavior from theoretical calculations.

Materials from Extreme Conditions

This section reviews the use of high pressure (P) along with high temperature (T) techniques to prepare and study mainly inorganic materials including dense mineral phases and ceramics, solid state elements and compounds, framework materials, and liquids and glasses in different polymorphic forms. The review focuses mainly on high-P,T solid state chemistry and materials synthesis experiments carried out using diamond anvil cells and large volume apparatus as well as some results from dynamic shock compression experiments, and predictions of new compounds and their properties from theoretical calculations. This article represents an edited update of a previous contribution extending through 2012, highlighting new areas of investigation and studies carried out until late 2018.

Materials From Extreme High Pressure Conditions

We review the results of our work on the iodine interaction with
thioamides, selenoamides, and amides. Complexes with (i) “spoke” or “extended
spoke” structures, D ⋅ I 2 and D ⋅ I 2 ⋅ I 2 , respectively, (D is the ligand donor) (ii) iodonium salts of
 { [ D 2 − I ] + [ I n ] − } ( n = 3 , 7) and { [ D 2 − I ] + [ FeCl 4 ] − } formulae and (iii) disulfides of the categories
(a) [ D - D ], (b) { [ D - DH ] + [ I 3 ] − } have been isolated and
characterized. A compound of formula { [ D 2 − I ] + [ I 3 ] − [ D ⋅ I 2 ] } containing both types of complexes
(i) and (ii) was also isolated.
The interaction of diiodine with selenium analogs of the antithyroid drug 6- n -propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU), of formulae RSeU (6-alkyl-2-Selenouracil) results in the formation of complexes with 
formulae [(RSeU) I 2 ]. All these results are correlated with the mechanism of
action of antithyroid drugs. Finally, we review here our work on the diiodine interaction
with the amides (LO).

Interaction of Thioamides, Selenoamides, and Amides with Diiodine

The application of high pressures to biomaterials can often result in significant structural modifications and, in some cases, also lead to changes in the rates and the equilibria of any associated biological activities. Pressure-induced changes can conveniently be monitored by molecular spectroscopy. We present here a brief overview of the effects of high pressures on the IR and Raman spectra of biomaterials that have been reported over the past 25 years. Examples of the biomaterials that have been examined are model antithyroid drugs, proteins, amino acids, dental materials, human bones, and bioorganometallic compounds. In addition, some recent investigations on the effect of pressure on microbial activity and the conversion of biomass into molecular hydrogen under supercritical water conditions are discussed. Two typical diamond-anvil cells (DACs), which are used for high-pressure vibrational spectroscopic measurements, are also described here.
