In wireless sensor networks WSNs, location information is regarded as essential information to achieve intelligent monitoring and control. Recently, a large number of range-based localisation algorithms were proposed. Nearly, all of the algorithms are based on least square method, in which the sum of all ranging error is treated as the performance index. The disadvantage is ignoring the probability characteristics of ranging error. This paper aims to integrate the ranging characteristic to improve the localisation accuracy. First, introducing a probability factor represents the credibility of distance measurement. Then, the probability factor is integrated into the optimised performance index, and the location of unknown sensor node are estimated and calculated. In addition, the method of determining the probability factor of the ranging information is also provided. Finally, we have performed many simulations to validate the performance of the localisation algorithms proposed. Experimental results show that the localisation accuracy is improved.

Range-based localisation algorithms integrated with the probability of ranging error in wireless sensor networks

With the envisioned era of Internet of Things (IoTs), all aspects of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will be connected to improve transport safety, relieve traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, enhance the comfort of transportation and significantly reduce road accidents. In IoVs, regular exchange of current position, direction, velocity, etc., enables mobile vehicles to predict an upcoming accident and alert the human drivers in time or proactively take precautionary actions to avoid the accident. The actualization of this concept requires the use of channel access protocols that can guarantee reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This paper investigates the application of network coding concept to increase content of every transmission and achieve improved broadcast reliability with less number of retransmission. In particular, we proposed Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) scheme, introduced an RTB/CTB handshake to overcome hidden node problem and reduce packets collision rate. The performance of CARER is clearly shown with detailed theoretical analysis and further validated with simulation experiments.

Improving Reliability of Message Broadcast over Internet of Vehicles (IoVs)

Evolving networks of wireless ad hoc sensing nodes have many attractive applications. Localisation, that is to determine where a given node is physically located, is a key enabler for many applications of sensor networks. As sensor networks move closer to extensive deployments, security becomes a major concern, resulting in a new demand for secure localisation and location proving systems. We propose a secure localisation system based on a secure hop algorithm. A location verification system that allows the base station to verify the location claims of sensor nodes is also presented. It prevents a node from falsifying reported location information and can be used for location-based access control. In order to support the resource-constrained sensor nodes, the proposed approach makes use of efficient one-way hash functions. Finally, we report the evaluation of the secure localisation system. The proposed scheme performs well under a range of scenarios tested and is resilient against an attacker creating incorrect location information in other nodes.

Secure localization and location verification in sensor networks

A large-scale wireless sensor network relies on broadcast protocol for data communication. This paper presents an idea for a base station to reliably and securely broadcast announcing messages to the network in an intrusion-tolerant way. Our Intrusion-Tolerant Broadcast Protocol based on Mutual Verification scheme guarantees that no forged information can be propagated to the network if an intruder is assumed to not compromise the base station. We show that our proposed protocol successfully runs and also demonstrate the effectiveness of the protocol by introducing a theorem and the proof of the theorem.

ITB: intrusion-tolerant broadcast protocol in wireless sensor networks

In this paper we propose a new key establishment protocol enabling any data aggregation protocol to be operated securely. This is accomplished by a bidirectional key distribution scheme based on Forward Key Setup and Backward Key Setup developed by using synchronized broadcast and multi-level key concept. Our protocol, called SPDA(Security Protocol for Data Aggregation) is well suited for any data aggregation algorithms and applications. Our analysis results prove SPDA's efficiency meaning that its communication cost is manageable
