China's Loess Plateau is both the largest and deepest loess deposit in the world, and it has long been one of the most severely eroded areas on Earth. Since the 1970s, numerous soil- and water-conservation practices have been implemented: terracing, planting of vegetation, natural vegetation rehabilitation, and check-dam construction. With the implementation of the Grain-for-Green Project in 1999, the Loess Plateau has become the most successful ecological restoration zone in China. However, these large-scale restoration measures and drought have significantly reduced both runoff and sediment from the Loess Plateau. Hydrogeomorphic Ecosystem Responses to Natural and Anthropogenic Changes in the Loess Plateau of China

Electrokinetic remediation of chromium (Cr)-contaminated soil with citric acid (CA) and polyaspartic acid (PASP) as electrolytes

The main aim of this study was to apply and compare two GIS-based data mining models, namely support vector machine (SVM) by four kernel functions (linear-SVM, polynomial-SVM, radial basic function-SVM, and sigmoidal-SVM) and entropy models in landslide susceptibility mapping, in Shangzhou District, China. Initially, 145 landslide locations were mapped using early reports, aerial photographs, and supported by field surveys. Subsequently, landslides in the study area were divided randomly into training and validation datasets (70/30) using ArcGIS 10.0 software. In the current study, 14 landslide conditioning factors, namely, slope aspect, slope angle, profile curvature, plan curvature, altitude, topographic wetness index (TWI), stream power index (SPI), sediment transport index (STI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), distance from roads, distance from rivers, distance from faults, rainfall, and lithology, were exploited to detect the most susceptible areas. In the next step, landslide susceptibility maps generated by four types of SVM or entropy models were produced. Finally, validation of the landslide susceptibility maps produced by different models was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves. The results showed that the entropy model exhibited the highest success rate (0.7610), followed by polynomial-SVM (0.7526), the sigmoidal-SVM (0.7518), radial basic function-SVM (0.7446), and linear-SVM (0.7390) models. Similarly, the ROC plots also showed that the prediction rates gave almost similar results. The entropy model had the highest prediction rate (0.7599), followed by polynomial-SVM (0.7259), sigmoidal-SVM (0.7203), radial basic function-SVM (0.7149), and linear-SVM (0.7009) models. Hence, it can be concluded that the five models used in this study gave close results, with the entropy model exhibiting best performance in landslide susceptibility mapping.

Laboratory Investigation on Strength Characteristics of Expansive Soil Treated with Jute Fiber Reinforcement

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal and has spread widely in the environment in recent decades. This review summarizes current knowledge about Cd contamination of leafy vegetables, its toxicity, exposure, health risks, and approaches to reducing its toxicity in humans. Leafy vegetable consumption has been identified as a dominant exposure pathway of Cd in the human body. An overview of Cd pollution in leafy vegetables as well as the main sources of Cd is given. Notable estimated daily intakes and health risks of Cd exposure through vegetable consumption for humans are revealed in occupational exposure areas and even in some reference areas. Vegetable consumption is one of the most significant sources of exposure to Cd, particularly in occupational exposure regions. Therefore, numerous approaches have been developed to minimize the accumulation of Cd in leafy vegetables, among which the breeding of Cd pollution-safe cultivars is one of the most effective tools. Furthermore, dietary supplements from leafy vegetables perform positive roles in alleviating Cd toxicity in humans with regard to the effects of essential mineral elements, vitamins and phytochemicals taken into the human body via leafy vegetable consumption.

Toxicity of cadmium and its health risks from leafy vegetable consumption.

Protected areas (PAs) play an important role in the conservation of valuable forest resources, and an increasing number of areas are being designated as PAs worldwide. However, climate change could drive endangered forest plants out of PAs, and impact the function of PAs to conserve endangered forest plants. Hence, it is necessary for conservation biologists to put forward a simple method to evaluate the ability of PAs to conserve endangered forest plants. Here, we studied 61 endangered forest plants from three ecoregions in China. We applied species distribution modeling to project suitable habitats of endangered forest plants, and used geographical information system to compute whether PAs could support the conservation of endangered forest plants. With climate change caused by increasing gas concentration, the overall ability of PAs to support the conservation of endangered forest plants will likely decrease compared to the conservation needs of ecoregions. We found that PAs have varying abilities to conserve endangered forest plants in different ecoregions. For temperate broadleaf mixed forests and tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, we found that climate change will decrease the PAs’ ability to support the conservation of endangered forest plants effectively in the existing forest landscape. In contrast, we found that temperate conifer forests will likely remain effective. Using this information, we proposed the conservation plans for different ecoregions under climate change. For PAs with limited ability to support the conservation of endangered forest plants in an ecoregion, we recommend expanding the areas of forests and PAs based on the suitable habitats of the endangered forest plants. For PAs with stable ability to support the conservation of endangered forest plants in an ecoregion, we recommend expanding the conservation areas in PAs.

Protected areas may not effectively support conservation of endangered forest plants under climate change

Many biological conservationists take actions to conserve plant species with extremely small populations (PSESP) in China; however, there have been few studies on the spatial distribution of threats to PSESP. Hence, we selected distribution data of PSESP and made a map of the spatial distribution of threats to PSESP in China. First, we used the weight assignment method to evaluate the threat risk to PSESP at both country and county scales. Second, we used a geographic information system to map the spatial distribution of threats to PSESP, and explored the threat factors based on linear regression analysis. Finally, we suggested some effective conservation options. We found that the PSESP with high values of protection, such as the plants with high scientific research values and ornamental plants, were threatened by over-exploitation and utilization, habitat fragmentation, and a small sized wild population in broad-leaved forests and bush fallows. We also identified some risk hotspots for PSESP in China. Regions with low elevation should be given priority for ex- and in-situ conservation. Moreover, climate change should be considered for conservation of PSESP. To avoid intensive over-exploitation or utilization and habitat fragmentation, in-situ conservation should be practiced in regions with high temperatures and low temperature seasonality, particularly in the high risk hotspots for PSESP that we proposed. Ex-situ conservation should be applied in these same regions, and over-exploitation and utilization of natural resources should be prevented. It is our goal to apply the concept of PSESP to the global scale in the future.
