In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been studied in the context of the Metaverse to provide users with immersive cyber-virtual experiences in mixed-reality environments. This survey introduces six typical IoT applications in the Metaverse, including collaborative healthcare, education, smart city, entertainment, real estate, and socialization. In the IoT-inspired Metaverse, we also comprehensively survey four pillar technologies that enable augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), namely, responsible artificial intelligence (AI), high-speed data communications, cost-effective mobile edge computing (MEC), and digital twins. According to the physical-world demands, we outline the current industrial efforts and seven key requirements for building the IoT-inspired Metaverse: immersion, variety, economy, civility, interactivity, authenticity, and independence. In addition, this survey describes the open issues in the IoT-inspired Metaverse, which need to be addressed to eventually achieve the convergence of physical and cyber worlds.

When Internet of Things Meets Metaverse: Convergence of Physical and Cyber Worlds

Federated learning (FL) has been increasingly considered to preserve data training privacy from eavesdropping attacks in mobile-edge computing-based Internet of Things (EdgeIoT). On the one hand, the learning accuracy of FL can be improved by selecting the IoT devices with large data sets for training, which gives rise to a higher energy consumption. On the other hand, the energy consumption can be reduced by selecting the IoT devices with small data sets for FL, resulting in a falling learning accuracy. In this article, we formulate a new resource allocation problem for privacy-preserving EdgeIoT to balance the learning accuracy of FL and the energy consumption of the IoT device. We propose a new FL-enabled twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (FL-DLT3) framework to achieve the optimal accuracy and energy balance in a continuous domain. Furthermore, long short-term memory (LSTM) is leveraged in FL-DLT3 to predict the time-varying network state while FL-DLT3 is trained to select the IoT devices and allocate the transmit power. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed FL-DLT3 achieves fast convergence (less than 100 iterations) while the FL accuracy-to-energy consumption ratio is improved by 51.8% compared to the existing state-of-the-art benchmark.

Federated learning (FL) can train a global model from clients' local data set, which can make full use of the computing resources of clients and performs more extensive and efficient machine learning on clients with protecting user information requirements. Many existing works have focused on optimizing FL accuracy within the resource constrained in each individual round, however there are few works comprehensively consider the optimization for latency, accuracy and energy consumption over all rounds in wireless federated learning. Inspired by this, in this paper, we investigate FL in wireless networks where client selection and bandwidth allocation are two crucial factors which significantly affect the latency, accuracy and energy consumption of clients. We formulate the optimization problem as a mixed-integer problem, which is to minimize the cost of time and accuracy within the long-term energy constrained over all rounds. To address this optimization problem, we propose a per-round energy drift plus cost (PEDPC) algorithm from an online perspective, and the performance of the PEDPC algorithm is verified in simulation results in terms of latency, accuracy and energy consumption in IID and NON-IID data distributions.

Client Selection and Bandwidth Allocation for Federated Learning: An Online Optimization Perspective

In this paper, we investigate a fifth generation cellular vehicle-to-everything based platoon system and propose low-complexity dynamic manager selection and resource allocation algorithms in the finite block length regime, to meet the ultra reliable and low latency communication requirements of intra-platoon safety-related data transmission. A closed-form expression for the platoon manager index is derived, based on which a low-complexity dynamic platoon manager selection algorithm is proposed, enabling a significant communication performance enhancement over the conventional head vehicle platoon manager algorithm. This is also the first work to investigate the impact of finite block length on platoon communication. The optimal finite block length coding rate under automatic repeat request retransmission is obtained. A subchannel multiplexing criterion is proposed and closed-form expressions for the optimal transmission powers of the platoon manager and its subchannel multiplexing partner are derived. Based on the theoretical findings, a joint resource allocation and coding rate optimization algorithm is proposed, achieving a near-optimal performance in terms of groupcast latency with a significant complexity reduction over exhaustive search.

Dynamic Manager Selection Assisted Resource Allocation in URLLC With Finite Block Length for 5G-V2X Platoons

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been considered as a promising technology to provide seamless integration of multiple application services. Federated learning (FL) is carried out at edge clients in MEC for privacy-preserving training of data processing models. Despite that the edge clients with small data payloads consume less energy on FL training, the small data payload gives rise to a low learning accuracy due to insufficient input to the FL training. Inadequate selection of the edge clients can result in a large energy consumption at the edge clients, or a low learning accuracy of the FL training. In this paper, a new FL-based client selection optimization is proposed to balance the trade-off between energy consumption of the edge clients and the learning accuracy of FL. We first show that this optimization problem is NP-complete. Next, we propose a FL-based energy-accuracy balancing heuristic algorithm to approximate the optimal client selection in polynomial time. The numerical results show the advantage of our proposed algorithm.

Federated Learning for Energy-balanced Client Selection in Mobile Edge Computing

Thanks to flexible deployment and excellent maneuverability, autonomous drones have been recently considered as an effective means to act as aerial data relays for wireless ground devices with limited or no cellular infrastructure, e.g., smart farming in a remote area. Due to the broadcast nature of wireless channels, data communications between the drones and the ground devices are vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks. This article develops BloothAir, which is a secure multi-hop aerial relay system based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connected autonomous drones. For encrypting the BLE communications in BloothAir, a channel-based secret key generation is proposed, where received signal strength at the drones and the ground devices is quantized to generate the secret keys. Moreover, a dynamic programming-based channel quantization scheme is studied to minimize the secret key bit mismatch rate of the drones and the ground devices by recursively adjusting the quantization intervals. To validate the design of BloothAir, we build a multi-hop aerial relay testbed by using the MX400 drone platform and the Gust radio transceiver, which is a new lightweight onboard BLE communicator specially developed for the drone. Extensive real-world experiments demonstrate that the BloothAir system achieves a significantly lower secret key bit mismatch rate than the key generation benchmarks, which use the static quantization intervals. In addition, the high randomness of the generated secret keys is verified by the standard NIST test, thereby effectively protecting the BLE communications in BloothAir from the eavesdropping attacks.

BloothAir: A Secure Aerial Relay System Using Bluetooth Connected Autonomous Drones

Recent advances in inter-vehicle wireless communications allow for automated and coordinated vehicles' driving in platoon-based vehicular cyber-physical systems (PVCPS). This article presents a comprehensive low-latency cooperative security (LLCS) framework for secure and timely data dissemination in PVCPS. A new cooperative secret key agreement protocol is incorporated to produce secret keys for platooning vehicles based on their radio channel correlation. A new transmit rate adaptation mechanism is presented to minimize the end-to-end latency of the data dissemination in PVCPS. We also numerically test the confidentiality and timeliness of the LLCS framework in terms of key agreement probability and dissemination delay. It is believed that the LLCS framework is the demand of the time to enable secure and reliable autonomous driving for future PVCPS.

Confidentiality and Timeliness of Data Dissemination in Platoon-based Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems

In this paper, we present a practical secret key management for data relay security of bluetooth-connected drones. Time-varying received signal strengths between the drones and the ground sensing nodes are quantized to generate the secret key pairs, where the quantization interval is adjusted to reduce the number of mismatched secret key bits. To validate the key management performance, a multihop aerial relay system testbed is developed based on the MX400 drone platform and the bluetooth low energy radio transceiver.
