The voices of local manufacturers have largely been overlooked in academic and policy debates on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the developing world. This article makes a contribution towards filling this gap in the literature by explicitly taking a phenomenological approach that maps the interpretations given to Western-based CSR initiatives by local manufacturers. Data from two qualitative research projects on CSR initiatives in the soccer ball industry of Sialkot, Pakistan, are utilized to explore this issue in an inductive and exploratory manner. The article suggests that many soccer ball manufacturers in Sialkot perceive CSR as part of the wider historic project of Western imperialism in the developing world through which economic resources are extracted from local manufacturers while their perceptions of what constitutes socially responsible behaviour are delegitimized. CSR As Imperialism: Towards a Phenomenological Approach to CSR In the Developing World

This article analyses the ways in which major, multinational mining companies operating within Australia understand sustainable development and articulate their “social licence to operate”. The article contributes a novel perspective to ongoing discussions about the social licence by exploring the ways in which leading Australian mining companies define and assert their social licences through sustainable development discourse. A content and discourse analysis of 18 sustainability reports across a four year period, supplemented by qualitative interview data, draws out these issues. While most companies use these reports to confirm beliefs in the necessity of a social licence, the ways in which the licence is specifically defined and maintained are not generally made explicit. Additionally, key theoretical criteria required for a social licence, such as free, prior and informed consent, appear to be overlooked. In conclusion, the article suggests ways in which criteria for a social licence within the mining industry could be defined more clearly and raises consequent questions to shape future research.

Why Every Company Needs a CSR Strategy and How to Build It

This paper contributes to the emerging discussion on the role of government in corporate social responsibility (CSR) from a developing country perspective. Drawing on a preliminary conceptual framework, the paper critically examines the extent to which the Nigerian government has facilitated or inhibited CSR practices, and the ramifications for corporate social development. It demonstrates that the nature of the Nigerian state, the country's rentier economy, and the contested nature of CSR have prevented the Nigerian government from providing an enabling environment for CSR, which, together with oil companies' failures, undermine the possibility of corporate social development in the Niger Delta.
