Indices for M-mode measurements in dogs usually have been based on the assumption that a linear relationship exists between these measurements and body weight (BW) or body surface area (BSA). The relationships between the geometry of 3-dimensional objects do not support this assumption. The purposes of this study were to retrospectively examine M-mode data from a large number of dogs of varying sizes and breeds that were examined by a large number of ultrasonographers, to use the allometric equation to determine the appropriate BW exponent required to predict these cardiac dimensions, and to determine normal mean values and prediction intervals for common M-mode variables. Linear regression analyses of data from 494 dogs (2.2-95 kg) revealed a good correlation between M-mode measurements and BW after logarithmic transformation of the data (r2 = .55-.88). Most variables were most closely related to an index of body length, BW(1/3), although the exponent that best predicted diastolic and systolic left ventricular wall thicknesses was closer to 0.25. No variable indexed well to BW or BSA. With these data, appropriate mean values and prediction intervals were calculated for normal dogs, allowing veterinarians to correctly and appropriately index M-mode values. The equations developed from this study appear to be applicable to adult dogs of most breeds.

Allometric scaling of M-mode cardiac measurements in normal adult dogs.

Levels of recombination vary among species, among chromosomes within species, and among regions within chromosomes in mammals. This heterogeneity may affect levels of diversity, efficiency of selection, and genome composition, as well as have practical consequences for the genetic mapping of traits. We compared the genetic maps to the genome sequence assemblies of rat, mouse, and human to estimate local recombination rates across these genomes. Humans have greater overall levels of recombination, as well as greater variance. In rat and mouse, the size of the chromosome and proximity to telomere have less effect on local recombination rate than in human. At the chromosome level, rat and mouse X chromosomes have the lowest recombination rates, whereas human chromosome X does not show the same pattern. In all species, local recombination rate is significantly correlated with several sequence variables, including GC%, CpG density, repetitive elements, and the neutral mutation rate, with some pronounced differences between species. Recombination rate in one species is not strongly correlated with the rate in another, when comparing homologous syntenic blocks of the genome. This comparative approach provides additional insight into the causes and consequences of genomic heterogeneity in recombination.

Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Canine Chronic Valvular Heart Disease

The aim of this study was to describe the clinical phenotype of Dogue de Bordeaux (DdB) referred for cardiac investigation, with particular reference to the prevalence of atrial fibrillation and associated features. Review of canine medical records of two United Kingdom veterinary referral hospitals identified 64 DdB with available echocardiographic and electrocardiographic (ECG)/Holter data. Atrial fibrillation was documented in 25 (39%) dogs and supraventricular tachycardia was recorded in five (7.8%) dogs. In a subset of 34 dogs, excluding congenital heart disease (n=17), presence of a cardiac mass (n=7) and non-cardiac neoplasia (n=6), 19 (56%) dogs had atrial fibrillation, with a median heart rate of 200 beats per min (bpm) on presentation. Atrial fibrillation was inconsistently associated with cardiac chamber remodelling, but was frequently associated with systolic dysfunction (13/19, 68.4%) and right sided atrial or ventricular dilatation (14/19, 73.7%) in dogs with atrial fibrillation in this subset. No dogs in this subset had right sided atrial or ventricular dilatation in the absence of supraventricular arrhythmia or systolic dysfunction. The absence of structural heart disease in some dogs with supraventricular arrhythmias suggests that an underlying primary arrhythmic process might be responsible for initiating remodelling, although a primary cardiomyopathy cannot be ruled out.

Phenotypic description of cardiac findings in a population of Dogue de Bordeaux with an emphasis on atrial fibrillation

OBJECTIVES: To describe the incidence of elevated serum cardiac troponin I in dogs with acute ischaemic strokes, to evaluate its prognostic value in these patients and characterise a possible relationship between cardiac troponin I elevation in dogs with ischaemic strokes and underlying cardiac dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective study of 18 dogs with acute ischaemic stroke diagnosed by MRI of the brain. Serum cardiac troponin I concentration, trans‐thoracic echocardiography and six‐lead electrocardiography were performed and findings were compared between dogs with good and poor outcome. RESULTS: Serum cardiac troponin I was increased in 17 dogs (median 0.95 ng/mL; range 0.146 to 153). Focal hyperechoic regions of myocardium were visible in two dogs using trans‐thoracic echocardiography and presumed to represent acute infarcts. A significant association was found between cardiac troponin I and creatinine concentrations. No difference in cardiac troponin I concentrations was detected between dogs that experienced good and poor outcomes. Clinically important cardiac dysfunction was identified in two dogs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cardiac troponin I is commonly elevated in patients diagnosed with acute ischaemic stroke but, in this small study population, did not have prognostic value. Larger studies (recruiting a study population of 98 dogs for a power of 0.8 and a 0.05 alpha/critical value) would aid in further investigation of these preliminary results.

Preliminary investigation of serum cardiac troponin I in dogs with acute ischaemic stroke.

Echocardiographic reference intervals in healthy UK deerhounds and prevalence of preclinical dilated cardiomyopathy: a prospective, longitudinal study.

Between 2006 and 2015, a high incidence of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) was diagnosed in a captive population of banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) at Chester Zoo, United Kingdom. The aim of this study was to characterize DCM in these mongooses in order to raise awareness of this condition and help inform management and clinical decisions. Prospective clinical assessments, including echocardiography, radiography, and cardiac biomarkers, were carried out in four mongooses remaining in the collection. Radiographs from 15 mature mongooses were reviewed and cardiac size and metrics assessed. Ten postmortem reports and the histologic sections from nine of these cases were reviewed for cardiac lesions. Echocardiographic findings were consistent with a diagnosis of preclinical DCM in one out of the four cases assessed, and it was considered equivocal in a second case. Taurine levels were within normal limits for domestic carnivores. Radiographs in seven mongooses showed right-sided or generalized cardiomegaly. The width of the heart in intercostal spaces and vertebral-tracheal angle on the lateral view were the most-discriminatory radiographic variables for diagnosis of cardiac disease. At necropsy, there was gross pathological evidence consistent with DCM in seven out of 10 mongooses examined. Histopathologically, mild multifocal fibrosis and rare intermyofiber edema were observed. This study provides preliminary evidence that DCM occurs in captive banded mongoose, but etiology and wider prevalence need to be determined.
