Interfacial electron transfer (ET) between semiconductor nanomaterials and molecular adsorbates is an important fundamental process that is relevant to applications of these materials. Using femtosecond midinfrared spectroscopy, we have simultaneously measured the dynamics of injected electrons and adsorbates by directly monitoring the mid-IR absorption of electrons in the semiconductor and the change in adsorbate vibrational spectrum, respectively. We report on a series of studies designed to understand how the interfacial ET dynamics depends on the properties of the adsorbates, semiconductors, and their interaction. In Ru(dcbpy)2(SCN)2 (dcbpy = 2,2‘-bipyridine-4,4‘-dicarboxylate) sensitized TiO2 thin films, 400 nm excitation of the molecule promotes an electron to the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state, from which it is injected into TiO2. Ultrafast Electron Transfer Dynamics from Molecular Adsorbates to Semiconductor Nanocrystalline Thin Films

▪ Abstract Electron injection at dye-sensitized semiconductors is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on theoretical and photoelectrochemical studies of dye-sensitized planar and single-crystal electrodes. The accepted mechanism of electron injection, which was derived from these classical studies, is introduced. Selected photoelectrochemical studies of dye-sensitized nanocrystalline semiconductors are reviewed; emphasis is given to factors that influence the efficiencies of electron injection and charge recombination. The development of quasi-solid-state nanocrystalline dye-sensitized solar cells is also discussed. Recent time-resolved spectroscopic studies of electron injection and charge recombination are reviewed. These studies have led to a better understanding of electron injection mechanisms, and have revealed the limitations of the classical models.

Electron injection at dye-sensitized semiconductor electrodes.

Electrochemical capacitors and lithium-ion batteries have seen little change in their electrolyte chemistry since their commercialization, which has limited improvements in device performance. Combining superior physical and chemical properties and a high dielectric-fluidity factor, the use of electrolytes based on solvent systems that exclusively use components that are typically gaseous under standard conditions show a wide potential window of stability and excellent performance over an extended temperature range. Electrochemical capacitors using difluoromethane show outstanding performance from -78° to +65°C, with an increased operation voltage. The use of fluoromethane shows a high coulombic efficiency of ~97% for cycling lithium metal anodes, together with good cyclability of a 4-volt lithium cobalt oxide cathode and operation as low as -60°C, with excellent capacity retention.

Solvents and Supporting Electrolytes in the Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2.

The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable compounds is a promising route toward the valorization of this molecule of high environmental impact. Yet, an industrial process involving CO2 electroreduction is still far from reality and requires deep and fundamental studies for a further understanding and better development of the process. In this work, we describe in situ spectroelectrochemical studies based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of the CO2 reduction in acetonitrile solutions at copper electrodes. The influence of factors such as the water content and the supporting electrolyte on the reaction products were evaluated and compared to products obtained on metal electrodes other than Cu, such as Pt, Pb, Au, Pd, and Ag. The results show that at Cu electrodes in acetonitrile containing small amounts of water, the main reaction products from CO2 reduction are carbonate, bicarbonate, and CO.
