Neurocognitive Dysfunction in Bipolar and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Depends on History of Psychosis Rather Than Diagnostic Group
Carmen Simonsen,Kjetil Sundet,Anja Vaskinn,Astrid B. Birkenaes,John A. Engh,John A. Engh,A. Faerden,A. Faerden,Halldóra Jónsdóttir,Halldóra Jónsdóttir,Petter Andreas Ringen,Stein Opjordsmoen,Stein Opjordsmoen,Ingrid Melle,Ingrid Melle,Svein Friis,Svein Friis,Ole A. Andreassen,Ole A. Andreassen +18 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that neurocognitive dysfunction in bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders is determined more by history of psychosis than by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) diagnostic category or subtype, supporting a more dimensional approach in future diagnostic systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased mortality in schizophrenia due to cardiovascular disease - a non-systematic review of epidemiology, possible causes, and interventions.
Petter Andreas Ringen,Petter Andreas Ringen,John A. Engh,Astrid B. Birkenaes,Ingrid Dieset,Ingrid Dieset,Ole A. Andreassen,Ole A. Andreassen +7 more
TL;DR: There is an urgent need to develop and implement effective programs to increase life expectancy in schizophrenia, and it is argued that mental health workers should be more involved in this important task.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Level of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Bipolar Disorder Equals That of Schizophrenia: A Comparative Study
Astrid B. Birkenaes,Stein Opjordsmoen,Cathrine Brunborg,John A. Engh,Halldóra Jónsdóttir,P. Andreas Ringen,Carmen Simonsen,Anja Vaskinn,Kåre I. Birkeland,Svein Friis,Kjetil Sundet,Ole A. Andreassen +11 more
TL;DR: The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was alarmingly high for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia patients compared with the general population, and the prevalence was approximately the same in both diagnostic groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neurocognitive profiles in bipolar I and bipolar II disorder: differences in pattern and magnitude of dysfunction
Carmen Simonsen,Kjetil Sundet,Anja Vaskinn,Astrid B. Birkenaes,John A. Engh,Charlotte Fredslund Hansen,Halldóra Jónsdóttir,Petter Andreas Ringen,Stein Opjordsmoen,Svein Friis,Ole A. Andreassen +10 more
TL;DR: Bipolar I patients have more widespread cognitive dysfunction both in pattern and magnitude, and a higher proportion has clinically significant cognitive impairments compared with patients with bipolar II, which may suggest neurobiological differences between the two bipolar subgroups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predictors of medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Halldóra Jónsdóttir,Halldóra Jónsdóttir,Stein Opjordsmoen,Stein Opjordsmoen,Astrid B. Birkenaes,Astrid B. Birkenaes,Carmen Simonsen,John A. Engh,John A. Engh,Petter Andreas Ringen,Anja Vaskinn,Svein Friis,Svein Friis,Kjetil Sundet,Kjetil Sundet,Ole A. Andreassen,Ole A. Andreassen +16 more
TL;DR: Investigation of potential risk factors for medication non‐adherence in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder finds correlations with prior use of medication and suicidal ideation.
