Platelet adenylyl cyclase activity as a trait marker of alcohol dependence
John A. Menninger,Anna E. Barón,Katherine M. Conigrave,John Whitfield,John B. Saunders,Anders Helander,C. J. Peter Eriksson,Bridget F. Grant,Paula L. Hoffman,Boris Tabakoff +9 more
TL;DR: It is found that CsF- and forskolin-stimulated platelet AC activity discriminates between subjects with and without alcohol dependence in a population of subjects who had not consumed significant quantities of ethanol recently, indicative of recent (heavy) drinking.
Heavy nicotine and alcohol use in alcohol dependence is associated with D2 dopamine receptor (DRD2) polymorphism
Jason P. Connor,Ross McD. Young,Bruce R. Lawford,John B. Saunders,Terry Ritchie,Ernest P. Noble +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the A1 allele of the D2 dopamine receptor (DRD2) gene has been independently associated with alcohol and nicotine dependence, but whether this polymorphism is associated with nicotine dependence in those who are also alcohol dependent has not been investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Substance-use disorders and psychological distress among police arrestees
TL;DR: To determine the 12‐month prevalence of substance‐use disorders and psychological morbidity in an Australian arrestee population, a large number of arrestees had experienced substance use problems in the previous 12 months.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiological Challenges in the Study of Behavioral Addictions: a Call for High Standard Methodologies
Hans-Jürgen Rumpf,D Brandt,Zsolt Demetrovics,Joël Billieux,Natacha Carragher,Matthias Brand,Henrietta Bowden-Jones,Afarin Rahimi-Movaghar,Sawitri Assanangkornchai,Renata Glavak-Tkalic,Guilherme Borges,Hae Kook Lee,Florian Rehbein,Naomi A. Fineberg,Karl Mann,Marc N. Potenza,Dan J. Stein,Susumu Higuchi,Daniel L. King,John B. Saunders,Vladimir Poznyak +20 more
TL;DR: It is recommended that future studies of putative behavioral addictions should more closely adhere to methodological standards of epidemiological research to reduce random and systematic error.
Journal Article
Computerised screening for hazardous drinking in primary care.
Kypros Kypri,S. Stephenson,John Desmond Langley,Martine L. Cashell-Smith,John B. Saunders,Dan Russell +5 more
TL;DR: The study demonstrates that the primary care setting can be used to facilitate access via computer to a large number of individuals whose drinking is hazardous and estimates the proportion who would consent to computerised brief intervention and follow-up.
