An apparel textile yarn comprising a polyamide, wherein the polyamide comprises a nylon and a polyetheramine, wherein the polyetheramine has a molecular weight of at least 1500,an Amine Hydrogen Equivalent Weight (AHEW) of less than 10 percent higher than the idealized AHEW for the polyetheramine, and wherein the polyamide may have a moisture regain ranging from about 10% to about 30%.

Alternating co-polymers of cyclic dicarboxylic acids and cyclic diamines may be used to produce nylon 6,6. Di-substituted furan compounds may be used as the raw material for producing furan-dicarboxylic acids and/or furan-diamines. The furan-dicarboxylic acids and furan-diamines may be copolymerized to produce polymer precursors for nylon 6,6. The polymer precursors may be hydrogenated and/or deoxygenated to produce nylon 6,6.

High-melting antimicrobial polymer fibers and antimicrobial fabrics comprising such fibers are prepared by preparing a masterbatch of polymer pellets (e.g., PET), silver and copper salts, and a compounding agent which provides free flowing polymer pellets which can be prepared in advance, with a long shelf life. Polymer masterbatches prepared by the methods of the invention can produce limited color or off-white antimicrobial fibers and fabrics using conventional melt spinning manufacturing methods. Fabrics incorporating fibers of the present invention are potent inhibitors of Athlete's foot fungi, gram negative and gram positive bacteria, and drug resistant pathogens.

A method of making synthetic polymer pellet feedstock having a high concentration of an anti-microbial agent includes the steps of: introducing a polymer into a mixing vessel; introducing a polysiloxane dispersant into the mixing vessel; introducing an anti-microbial agent comprised of a powdered metal material into the mixing vessel; heating and mixing the polymer, the polysiloxane dispersant and the anti-microbial agent to form a molten blend that exhibits a generally homogenous dispersal of the anti-microbial agent; extruding the molten blend to form filaments; and cutting the filaments to form metalized synthetic polymer pellet feedstock. The powdered metal material includes particles of silver in metallic or salt form measuring between about 2 micrometers and about 12 micrometers and particles of copper in metallic or salt form measuring between about 2 micrometers and about 12 micrometers.

Method for making polymer feedstock usable for generation of fiber having anti-microbial properties

A polyamide composition, which includes an optical brightener together with an anti-oxidant stabilizer, is disclosed. This composition is suitable for making yarns, such as sewing thread, and fabrics, garments, molded articles or other articles such as carpets from these yarns. Processes for incorporating optical brighteners into polyamide compositions, polymers and yarns to make fabrics and molded articles that exhibit superior whiteness after heat-setting are also disclosed.

The disclosures herein relate to a polymer such as nylon 66, having low yellowness and excellent whiteness retention for applications in melt extrusion and injection molding where an increase in molecular weight is not desirable. The polymer is prepared with a phosphorus compound content, e.g., a sodium hypophosphite (SHP) content, in an amount of 150 to 300 ppm by weight. The presence of an “end cap” additive such as one selected from acetic acid, propionic acid, benzoic acid, or succinic acid, added at the start of polymerization, effectively mitigates undesired molecular weight gain.
