Journal ArticleDOI
Averting a malaria disaster.
Nicholas J. White,François Nosten,Sornchai Looareesuwan,William M. Watkins,Kevin Marsh,Robert W. Snow,Gilbert Kokwaro,John H. Ouma,Tran Tinh Hien,Malcolm E. Molyneux,Malcolm E. Molyneux,Terrie E. Taylor,Terrie E. Taylor,Chris I. Newbold,TK Ruebush,M Danis,Brian Greenwood,Roy M. Anderson,Piero Olliaro +18 more
TL;DR: Pyrimethamine-sulphadoxine (PSD) is usually deployed as a successor to chloroquine, but resistance to PSD is increasing and a health calamity looms within the next few years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Immunity after treatment of human schistosomiasis mansoni. II. Identification of resistant individuals, and analysis of their immune responses
Anthony E. Butterworth,Monique Capron,John S. Cordingley,P.R. Dalton,David W. Dunne,H.C. Kariuki,G. Klmani,D.K. Koech,Mercy M Mugambi,John H. Ouma,M.A. Prentice,Brian A. Richardson,T.K.Arap Siongok,Robert F. Sturrock,D.W. Taylor +14 more
TL;DR: Findings indicated that resistance was an acquired and age-dependent phenomenon, not obviously related to previous egg-induced pathology, and marked differences between different individuals in their capacity to produce eosinophil-stimulating monocyte mediators cannot yet be related to resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adult resistance to schistosomiasis mansoni: age-dependence of reinfection remains constant in communities with diverse exposure patterns.
Narcis B. Kabatereine,Birgitte J. Vennervald,John H. Ouma,J. Kemijumbi,A. E. Butterworth,David W. Dunne,Anthony J. C. Fulford +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that adults are physiologically (perhaps immunologically) more resistant to infection after treatment than children.
Journal Article
IgA Antibodies to a Protective Antigen in Human Schistosomiasis Mansoni
J. M. Grzych,D. Grezel,Chuan Bo Xu,J L Neyrinck,Monique Capron,John H. Ouma,Anthony E. Butterworth,André Capron +7 more
TL;DR: Functional analysis revealed that IgA antibodies to Sm28GST displayed a potent neutralizing effect on the enzymatic properties of the molecule, and also markedly impaired schistosome fecundity, by limiting both the egg laying of mature worms and the hatching capacity of schistsome eggs into viable miracidia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Double-blind placebo-controlled study of concurrent administration of albendazole and praziquantel in schoolchildren with schistosomiasis and geohelminths.
G. R. Olds,Charles H. King,J. Hewlett,R Olveda,Guanling Wu,John H. Ouma,Pierre Peters,Stephen T. McGarvey,O. Odhiambo,Davy K. Koech,C. Y. Liu,Gemiliano D.L Aligui,G. Gachihi,Y. Kombe,I. Parraga,Bernadette L. Ramirez,Christopher C. Whalen,R. J. Horton,P. Reeve +18 more
TL;DR: A significant 6-month increase in serum hemoglobin was observed in children who received praziquantel, strongly supporting population-based mass treatment and suggesting a strong influence of dying parasites.
