A genetic algorithm for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence dependent setup times

This paper presents a scheduling problem for unrelated parallel machines with sequence-dependent setup times, using simulated annealing (SA). The problem accounts for allotting work parts of L jobs into M parallel unrelated machines, where a job refers to a lot composed of N items. Some jobs may have different items while every item within each job has an identical processing time with a common due date. Each machine has its own processing times according to the characteristics of the machine as well as job types. Setup times are machine independent but job sequence dependent. SA, a meta-heuristic, is employed in this study to determine a scheduling policy so as to minimize total tardiness. The suggested SA method utilizes six job or item rearranging techniques to generate neighborhood solutions. The experimental analysis shows that the proposed SA method significantly outperforms a neighborhood search method in terms of total tardiness.

Young drivers have the highest fatality involvement rates of any driver age group within the United States driving population. They also experience a higher percentage of single-vehicle crashes compared with others. When looking at the methods of improving this alarming death rate of young drivers, it is important to identify the determinants of higher crash and injury severity. With that intention, the study developed, using the Florida Traffic Crash Database, a set of sequential binary logistic regression models to predict the crash severity outcome of single-vehicle fixed-object crashes involving young drivers. Models were organized from the lowest severity level to the highest and vice versa to examine the reliability of the selection process, but it was found that there was no considerable impact based on this selection. Analysis of Severity of Young Driver Crashes: Sequential Binary Logistic Regression Modeling

Access management applications, which could effectively be used to improve traffic operations and safety, are getting increased popularity. While there are some studies providing important information on various access management methods and techniques, questions still remain surrounding the effects of specific access management treatments on roadway operations and safety. This study provides the results of a case study in one of such areas, where the operational and safety characteristics of a full median opening are compared with those of a directional median opening, in the form of a before-and-after study. Field data were collected at the site by using video camera technique. Before period consisted of one week of field data where the intersection operated as a full median opening. The median was then converted into a directional median opening by using temporary physical barriers and field data were collected again in the same way for another week. Only the data collected during daytime, under good weather conditions with no special events were considered in the analysis. Operational characteristics were measured in terms of weighted average delay and weighted average travel time experienced by the left turning vehicles from the stop controlled approach (driveway), where safety performance was measured in terms of number of conflicts and rate of conflicts. According to the findings, the total weighted average travel delay was significantly reduced after the median opening was made to function as directional. However, changes in the travel times were not statistically significant. The average number of conflicts per hour was reduced by almost 50 percent whereas conflict rate per thousand involved vehicles was also significantly reduced. Additionally, the severity of conflicts measured subjectively was also found to be reduced during the after time period. Accordingly, both traffic operations and safety situations were found to be improved when the full median opening was converted to a directional opening.
