A new method for the ablation of undesirable tissue such as cells of a cancerous or non-cancerous tumor is disclosed. It involves the placement of electrodes into or near the vicinity of the undesirable tissue through the application of electrical pulses causing irreversible electroporation of the cells throughout the entire area of the undesirable tissue. The electric pulses irreversibly permeate the cell membranes, thereby invoking cell death. The irreversibly permeabilized cells are left in situ and are removed by the body immune system. The amount of tissue ablation achievable through the use of irreversible electroporation without inducing thermal damage is considerable.

Control circuitry is located within the case, and includes a primary cell or rechargeable power source, a receive coil for receiving an RF magnetic field to recharge the rechargeable power source, and a microcontroller for control of the implantable pulse generator. Improved assemblies, systems, and methods also provide a stimulation system for prosthetic or therapeutic stimulation of muscles, nerves, or central nervous system tissue, or any combination. An ECG monitoring system for ambulatory patients includes a small multi-electrode patch that adhesively attaches to the chest of a patient. A reusable battery-powered ECG monitor clips onto the patch and receives patient electrical signals from the electrodes of the patch. A processor continuously processes received ECG signals and stores the signals in memory in the monitor. The processor also analyzes the received ECG signals for predefined arrhythmia. If an arrhythmia is detected, a wireless transceiver in the ECG monitor transmits the event information and an ECG strip to a cellphone handset. The cellphone handset automatically relays the event information and ECG strip to a monitoring center for further diagnosis and necessary intervention.

This invention relates generally to medical electrode systems and, in particular, to an independently deployable sealed defibrillator electrode for use with an automatic or semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED). The invention also relates to the method of use thereof. More specifically, this invention relates to an electrode system comprising an electrode layer and a releasing layer which are hermetically sealed together. Each layer contains a pull-tab or gripper for allowing the user to deploy the electrode in one step by pulling apart the two layers. This invention is also directed to a method of using an electrode system of the invention wherein the electrode is deployed in one step by pulling the electrode layer and the releasing layer apart.

Independently deployable sealed defibrillator electrode pad and method of use

A percutaneous electrical therapy system with electrode position maintenance. In one embodiment, the system includes a control unit; an electrode electrically connectable to the control unit, the electrode having a sharp point at a distal end adapted to be inserted into a patient's tissue; and an inserted electrode holding mechanism adapted to hold the electrode in place after insertion of the sharp point of the electrode into the patient's tissue. In another embodiment, a method of providing electrical therapy can include inserting an electrode into a patient; using an inserted electrode holding mechanism to hold the inserted electrode in place in the patient; and applying an electrical signal to the electrode from a control unit.

Percutaneous electrical therapy system with electrode position maintenance

A method for performing ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring on an adult female is provided. An ambulatory ECG monitor (11), that includes a plurality of sensing electrodes (48) coupled to self-powered sensing circuitry (71), is provisioned. A monitoring site (15) is located on the surface of a patient's chest at midline and above the body of the sternum adjacent to the fourth and fifth intercostal spaces between the breasts in the upper portion of the intermammary cleft. The electrodes (48) are aligned and placed along the midline. Interference from breast tissue with placement of the ambulatory monitor (11) at the monitoring site (15) is evaluated. The ambulatory ECG monitor (11) is removably adhered to the monitoring site (15) clear of any breast tissue interference for the duration of monitoring. ECG data is sensed through the sensing electrodes (48) at the monitoring site (15) and the sensed ECG data is recorded into the sensing circuitry (71).
