A disk drive system and method capable of dynamically allocating data is provided. The disk drive system may include a RAID subsystem having a pool of storage, for example a page pool of storage that maintains a free list of RAIDs, or a matrix of disk storage blocks that maintain a null list of RAIDs, and a disk manager having at least one disk storage system controller. The RAID subsystem and disk manager dynamically allocate data across the pool of storage and a plurality of disk drives based on RAID-to-disk mapping. The RAID subsystem and disk manager determine whether additional disk drives are required, and a notification is sent if the additional disk drives are required. Dynamic data allocation and data progression allow a user to acquire a disk drive later in time when it is needed. Dynamic data allocation also allows efficient data storage of snapshots/point-in-time copies of virtual volume pool of storage, instant data replay and data instant fusion for data backup, recovery etc., remote data storage, and data progression, etc.

Virtual disk drive system and method

This data storage subsystem creates multiple virtual storage devices on demand, which are available to any and all of the system's host data processors. The subsystem utilizes a plurality of tape devices and automated tape libraries with the tape devices connected to a plurality of data processors via a high-speed network. A set of software components, the Network Storage Manager (NSM) controls all system operations. Depending upon the requested storage performance, one or more tape devices are assigned to a virtual device. Data stripping across multiple tape devices allows the storage bandwidth of a virtual device to be changed on demand. The overall capacity and performance of the subsystem is scalable by adding or removing storage devices. The NSM system controller contains a plurality of software elements including: Resource Allocation, Resource Configuration, Resource Management, and Security Management modules. The use of a networked storage manager enables the storage devices to be managed as a pool and yet be attached directly to the network as individual resources. The NSM also provides the mechanism for the enterprise management to control tape device allocation and configuration as well as other functions, such as tape cartridge movement, data migration and data security.

Performing data management operations on replicated data in a computer network. Log entries are generated for data management operations of an application executing on a source system. Consistency point entries are used to indicate a time of a known good, or recoverable, state of the application. A destination system is configured to process a copy of the log and consistency point entries to replicate data in a replication volume, the replicated data being a copy of the application data on the source system. When the replicated data represents a known good state of the application, as determined by the consistency point entries, the destination system(s) may perform a storage operation (e.g., snapshot, backup) to copy the replicated data and to logically associate the copied data with a time information (e.g., time stamp) indicative of the source system time when the application was in the known good state.

A modular computer storage system and method is provided for managing and directing data archiving functions, which is scalable and comprehends various storage media as well as diverse operating systems on a plurality of client devices. A client component is associated with one or more client devices for generating archival request. A file processor directs one or more storage devices, through one or more media components, which control the actual physical level backup on various storage devices. Each media component creates a library indexing system for locating stored data. A management component coordinates the archival functions between the various client components and the file processor, including setting scheduling policies, aging policies, index pruning policies, drive cleaning policies, configuration information, and keeping track of running and waiting jobs.

A system and method are provided for performing storage operations relating to a first secondary copy of electronic data. A storage policy or storage preferences may dictate that a replication copy should be used in storage operations performed to a particular client, sub-client, data, media or other item. Based on the storage policy, when a new client, sub-client, data, media or other item is received, a media agent determines whether there is a replication copy of the item. In the absence of a replication copy, one may be created. The replication copy may be provided by a third party application, or created by the client or a storage management system component. Information regarding the replication copy and its corresponding first secondary copy may be stored in a database. To optimize use of system resources, storage operations relating to the first secondary copy may be performed using the replication copy instead of the first secondary copy.

Provided are a method, system, and program for managing data in storage units. Storage pool information indicates an assignment of a plurality of storage units to a plurality of storage pools, wherein each pool is assigned zero or more storage units, wherein data associated with one storage pool is stored in a storage unit assigned to the storage pool, wherein the storage pool information for each pool indicates a threshold and target storage pool, and wherein the target storage pool is capable of being different from the storage pool. One storage unit associated with a source storage pool is selected and a determination is made of the threshold from the storage pool information for the source storage pool. A determination is made of whether the selected storage unit satisfies the determined threshold and if the selected storage unit satisfies the determined threshold, then a target storage unit in the target storage pool is selected if the storage pool information for the source storage pool indicates a target storage pool different from the source storage pool. Data from the selected storage unit is copied to the selected target storage unit.

Method, system, and program for moving data among storage units

A system and method for guaranteeing overwrite of expired data in a media device, the data being organized according to logical units provided on media devices organized as physical volumes. The method comprises the steps of: maintaining information associated with a status of a physical volume, and updating a physical volume's status information based upon a combination of that volume's prior status and that volume's current status; specifying a time duration that expired logical unit data may remain on a physical volume; based upon the volume's updated status information, determining whether a selected volume has expired data longer than the specified time duration; and, overwriting contents of the volume having data that has expired longer than the specified time duration.

System and method to guarantee overwrite of expired data in a virtual tape server

A method and system for efficiently importing/exporting a removable storage volume having a number of data files from a first virtual storage system to a second virtual storage system. The method includes writing a table of contents to the end of the removable storage volume in the first virtual storage system. The table of contents uniquely identifies the data files residing in the removable storage volume. Next, the removable storage volume is transferred to the second virtual storage system. Upon receipt of the removable storage volume, the second virtual storage system updates a database in the second virtual storage system utilizing the information contained in the table of contents without having to read each of the data files in the removable storage volume. In a related embodiment, for each of the data file in the removable storage volume, the table of contents includes a filename, starting record on the removable storage volume and number of records in the data file.

Method and system for efficiently importing/exporting removable storage volumes between virtual storage systems

A virtual data storage system provides a method and apparatus for adaptively throttling transfers into a cache storage to prevent an overrun in the cache storage. The virtual data storage system includes a storage interface appearing as a set of addressable, virtual storage devices, a cache storage for initially storing host-originated data files, storage devices for eventually storing the data files on a set of storage volumes, and a storage manager for directing the data files between the cache storage and the storage devices. An amount of available space in the cache storage, or a cache free space, is monitored against an adjustable cache space threshold. A storage throttle is computed when the cache free space drops below the cache space threshold. Additionally, a recall throttle is computed based on the cache free space and a number of storage devices reserved for recalling data files from the set of storage volumes. A maximum value of the storage throttle and the recall throttle is used to delay the storing of data files and the recalling of data files into the cache storage and to prevent overrunning the cache storage by completely depleting the cache free space.

Data is migrated from source media to target media in an automated tape library, where identifiers associated with the data are obtained from the source media, and the data and associated identifiers are consolidated by storing data/identifier paris in substantially continuous form or the target media. A plurality of source media units, such as magnetic tape cartridges, are first loaded to the library. Each source media unit contains one or more data blocks and a machine-readable identifier associated with each data block. The machine-readable identifier, for example, may be embodied by a machine-readable code imprinted on a housing of the media unit, or a code stored on the media itself. The identifier for each data block is obtained using the corresponding source media. Multiple data blocks and identifiers may be consolidated onto a single output media unit. The data blocks and identifiers on each output media unit are written in substantially contiguous form on output media units; on each output media unit, data blocks and associated identifiers are positioned in a predetermined relationship relative to each other. For example, each identifier may precede the associated data block. A catalog is created or updated to map the data blocks among their respective output media units.
