Unwed motherhood, particularly for the teenager, constitutes a series of subcrises: confrontation with the pregnancy, exclusion from school, physical changes, social isolation and interpersonal conflict, delivery, and caring for an infant. This paper describes the role which a mental health consultant can take in regard to interagency programs, research, and education. Specific consultation interventions, within the framework of crisis theory, are discussed for helping caregivers enable teenagers to cope with these subcrises.

The crisis of unwed motherhood: A consultation approach.

I must express my deep appreciation to the Academy and its President, the Reverend George C. Anderson, for being among the first to step forward to assist in our national effort in preparation for the 1970 White House Conference on Children and Youth. That I have been called upon to share a few thoughts with this assemblage of Academy members and guests is gratifying indeed. Conferences on Children and Youth convened by the White House have been held in every decade in this century. Surely the proposed 1970 Con ference, like each of those that have preceded it, has a magnificent oppor tunity to bring together our nation's resources in a conjoint effort to up grade the quality of life, expand opportunities for personal fulfillment, and help make possible in the decades ahead the unfettered contributions of all youth to our nation and the world. Few tasks, I believe, are more impor tant or more demanding of our sustained effort than this. We cannot shirk this vital responsibility. Neither can we fail our trust. As a nation, always we have been able to rise to meet and surmount the challenges, and I be lieve that we shall do so now. What is at stake is nothing less than the
