Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

High peak-to-average power ratio of the transmit signal is a major drawback of multicarrier transmission such as OFDM or DMT. This article describes some of the important PAPR reduction techniques for multicarrier transmission including amplitude clipping and filtering, coding, partial transmit sequence, selected mapping, interleaving, tone reservation, tone injection, and active constellation extension. Also, we make some remarks on the criteria for PAPR reduction technique selection and briefly address the problem of PAPR reduction in OFDMA and MIMO-OFDM.

An overview of peak-to-average power ratio reduction techniques for multicarrier transmission

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique which is now used in most new and emerging broadband wired and wireless communication systems because it is an effective solution to intersymbol interference caused by a dispersive channel. Very recently a number of researchers have shown that OFDM is also a promising technology for optical communications. This paper gives a tutorial overview of OFDM highlighting the aspects that are likely to be important in optical applications. To achieve good performance in optical systems OFDM must be adapted in various ways. The constraints imposed by single mode optical fiber, multimode optical fiber and optical wireless are discussed and the new forms of optical OFDM which have been developed are outlined. The main drawbacks of OFDM are its high peak to average power ratio and its sensitivity to phase noise and frequency offset. The impairments that these cause are described and their implications for optical systems discussed.

OFDM for Optical Communications

The use of multi-amplitude signaling schemes in wireless OFDM systems requires the tracking of the fading radio channel. The paper addresses channel estimation based on time-domain channel statistics. Using a general model for a slowly fading channel, the authors present the MMSE and LS estimators and a method for modifications compromising between complexity and performance. The symbol error rate for a 18-QAM system is presented by means of simulation results. Depending upon estimator complexity, up to 4 dB in SNR can be gained over the LS estimator.

On channel estimation in OFDM systems

This paper discusses the analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel. This system uses the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel. When this technique is used with pilot-based correction, the effects of flat Rayleigh fading can be reduced significantly. An improvement in signal-to-interference ratio of 6 dB can be obtained over the bursty Rayleigh channel. In addition, with each subchannel signaling at a low rate, this technique can provide added protection against delay spread. To enhance the behavior of the technique in a heavily frequency-selective environment, interpolated pilots are used. A frequency offset reference scheme is employed for the pilots to improve protection against cochannel interference.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

A local fiber bus system is described wherein many users sequentially phase-modulate the output of a single light source. Since the modulated signal has a constant envelope, optical amplifiers can be used to boost the signal power along the bus to a level sufficient for reliable detection. Also, since a single laser source is used, a higher quality device (for example, with small linewidth) is more readily affordable. This system is analyzed to determine the limits of performance due to noise. The analysis indicates that many wideband signals could be accommodated if noise sources only, rather than signal distortions caused by nonideal optical devices, were the limiting factor. For example, with optical amplifiers distributed along the bus, this system can support 1000 10-MHz users. >
