A numerical model for direct phase-resolved simulation of nonlinear ocean waves propagating through fragmented sea ice is proposed. In view are applications to wave propagation and attenuation across the marginal ice zone. This model solves the full equations for nonlinear potential flow coupled with a nonlinear thin-plate formulation for the ice cover. A key new contribution is to modeling fragmented sea ice, which is accomplished by allowing the coefficient of flexural rigidity to vary spatially so that distributions of ice floes can be directly specified in the physical domain. Two-dimensional simulations are performed to examine the attenuation of solitary waves by scattering through an irregular array of ice floes. Two different measures based on the wave profile are used to quantify its attenuation over time for various floe configurations. Slow (near linear) or fast (exponential-like) decay is observed depending on such parameters as incident wave height, ice concentration and ice fragmentation.

This sixth edition of the Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences volume, coincident with the seventh eponymous conference includes 61 papers that span a variety of topics and are organized into nine parts as follows: (1) Submarine mass movement in margin construction and economic significance; (2) Failure dynamics from landslide geomorphology; (3) Geotechnical aspects of mass movement; (4) Multidisciplinary case studies; (5) Tectonics and mass movement processes; (6) Fluid flow and gas hydrates, (7) Mass transport deposits in modern and outcrop sedimentology; (8) Numerical and statistical analysis; and, (9) Tsunami generation from slope failure. The breath and quality of this body of work underpins a positive outlook and our enthusiasm for the future direction of research in this area of science as it moves towards ever more detailed analysis and monitoring. We also emphasize in this volume the need to look at mountain-scale outcrops to better understand our seismic imaging, to carry out statistical studies that draw on global data sets to better constrain broad behavioural characteristics, and to undertake numerical modelling to understand the sensitivity of a range of natural slopes.

The 2016 landslide at Saint-Luc-de-Vincennes, Québec: Geotechnical and morphological analysis of a combined flowslide and spread

On April 15 2014, a landslide occurred on the east shore of a lake in the municipality of Lac-des-Seize-Iles, about 100 km north of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The coastal landslide, with a length of 94 m and a width of 55 m, had a volume of about 30,500 m3 of sandy to gravelly till. It was likely triggered by a significant amount of water infiltration caused by a heavy rain coincident with an accelerated snow melt. The displaced mass spread on the lake floor and triggered a tsunami that broke and partly lifted the ice cover. Water and ice damaged several seasonal residences and boathouses on the periphery of the lake, in an area extending 450 m north and 500 m south of the landslide debris location. Observations on aerial photographs taken shortly after the event revealed the existence of radial structures on the ice cover in the affected area resulting from the evolution of the tsunami wave. Investigations carried out on east and west shores showed evidences of net marks on tree trunks explained by a maximum inundation height which can be as much as 1.8 m directly in front of the landslide position on the west shore.
