We review the application of non-relativistic constituent quark models to study one, two and three non-strange baryon systems. We present results for the baryon spectra, potentials and observables of the nucleon?nucleon (NN), N?, ?? and NN*(1440) systems, and binding energies of three non-strange baryon systems. We emphasize the observable effects related to quark antisymmetry and its interplay with quark dynamics.

Gluon, pion and confinement exchange currents in the nucleon

A consistent explanation of the Roper phenomenology

We study the spectra of mesons and baryons, composed of light quarks, in the framework of a semirelativistic potential model including instanten induced forces. We show how a simple modification of the instanton interaction in the baryon sector allows a good description of the meson and the baryon spectra using an interaction characterized by a unique set of parameters.

Unified meson-baryon potential

The $KN$ and $\overline{K}N$ low-energy elastic scattering is consistently studied in the framework of the QCD-inspired quark potential model. The model is composed of the $t$-channel one-gluon exchange potential, the $s$-channel one-gluon exchange potential, and the harmonic oscillator confinement potential. By means of the resonating group method, nonlocal effective interaction potentials for the $KN$ and $\overline{K}N$ systems are derived and used to calculate the $KN$ and $\overline{K}N$ elastic scattering phase shifts. By considering the effect of QCD renormalization, the contribution of the color octet of the clusters $(q\overline{q})$ and $(qqq)$, and the suppression of the spin-orbital coupling, the numerical results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental data.

KNandK¯Nelastic scattering in the quark potential model

A general Lorentz structure of the confining interaction between a quark and an antiquark is examined by using the linear potential and determined through fitting the experimental meson masses. The Lorentz structure thus determined gives a qq-bar confining potential which contains proper spin-dependent terms. Use of this potential in calculations of meson spectra leads to results which are in good agreement with the observed mass levels of light and heavy quark mesons.

Test of a general Lorentz structure of the qq-bar confinement in calculations of meson spectra

An improved QCD-inspired quark potential is introduced and employed to calculate baryon spectra. This potential has some novel features: (i) the one-gluon exchange potential in it is derived from the exact three-dimensional relativistic equation and contains a retardation term which is logarithmic; (ii) the confining part of the potential is generated from a linear potential Bethe-Salpeter (BS) kernel and a general Lorentz structure of the confinement and includes therefore various spin-dependent terms added to the linear potential; (iii) the off-shell correction part of the potential which is related to the negative energy component of the BS amplitude automatically gives rise to a harmonic oscillator term. We analyse the contributions of all parts of the potential to the baryon spectrum and find that the potential we use makes some improvements to theoretical baryon masses, especially for the Roper resonance.

Calculation of baryon spectra based on an improved quark potential

Based on the exact three-dimensional relativistic equation for qq bound states, an off-shell retarded one-gluon exchange potential is derived and employed to calculate meson spectra. The calculated results show that the retardation effect is important for the improvement of the theoretical values of lighter meson masses.

Examination of retardation effect on meson spectra

The retardation effect of gluon propagation on baryon spectra is examined. The calculated results show that the consideration of this effect gives appreciable improvements on both positive and negative parity baryon spectra.
