TL;DR: In this article, a concave or convex pattern is formed intentionally on a insulating film provided in contact with the lower surface of an amorphous silicon film, whereby at least a site is formed in which a metal element for accelerating crystallization can be segregated.
Abstract: The present invention is related to a thin film semiconductor which can be regarded as substantially a single crystal and a semiconductor device comprising an active layer formed by the thin film semiconductor. At least a concave or convex pattern is formed intentionally on a insulating film provided in contact with the lower surface of an amorphous silicon film, whereby at least a site is formed in which a metal element for accelerating crystallization can be segregated. Therefore, a crystal nuclei is selectively formed in a portion where the concave or convex pattern is located, which carries out controlling a crystal diameter. Thus, a crystalline silicon film is obtained. A crystallinity of the crystalline silicon film is improved by the irradiation of a laser light or an intense light having an energy equivalent to that of the laser light, whereby a monodomain region in which no grain boundary substantially exit is formed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a method to fabricate the active layer of a semiconductor device by sputtering on the substrate and then forming an amorphous silicon film by low pressure CVD on the silicon oxide film.
Abstract: A semiconductor device includes a substrate having an insulating film on its surface, and ac active layer made of a semiconductive thin film on the substrate surface. The thin film contains a mono-domain region formed of multiple columnar and/or needle-like crystals parallel to the substrate surface without including crystal boundaries therein, allowing the active layer to consist of the mono-domain region only. The insulating film underlying the active layer has a specific surface configuration of an intended pattern in profile, including projections or recesses. To fabricate the active layer, form a silicon oxide film by sputtering on the substrate. Pattern the silicon oxide film providing the surface configuration. Form an amorphous silicon film by low pressure CVD on the silicon oxide film. Retain in the silicon oxide film and/or the amorphous silicon film certain metallic element for acceleration of silicon film to a crystalline silicon film. Then, perform a second heat treatment in the halogen atmosphere forming on the crystalline silicon film a thermal oxide film containing halogen, whereby the crystalline silicon film alters to a mono-domain region.

TL;DR: In this paper, an active matrix type light-emitting device is used as a display device for a multi-gray scale color display, and an electrical apparatus having the same.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device capable of a clear multi-gray scale color display, and an electrical apparatus having the same. SOLUTION: Influence due to the characteristic variation of a thin film transistor 108 for electric current control is prevented by emitting light of EL element 109 formed in a pixel 104, and performing a gray shades display by a time division driving system for controlling non-emitting light by the time. Besides, an optimum structure corresponding to the performance required by each circuit or element is adopted to a thin film transistor itself formed on a substrate. Thereby, a reliable active matrix type light-emitting device is realized. A reliable and highly efficient electrical apparatus having a good picture quality is manufactured by adopting such an active matrix type light-emitting device as a display device.

TL;DR: In this paper, a memory circuit within a signal line driver circuit is made common among n signal lines (where n is a natural number greater than or equal to 2), and all signal lines can be driven by performing processing with respect to signal lines differing by memory circuit and D/A converter circuit, respectively, during the period of each division.
Abstract: The surface area occupied by a digital type signal line driver circuit in an image display device is large, and this is an impediment to reducing the size of the display device. A memory circuit within a signal line driver circuit is made common among n signal lines (where n is a natural number greater than or equal to 2). One horizontal scan period is divided into n divisions, and all signal lines can be driven by performing processing with respect to signal lines differing by memory circuit and D/A converter circuit, respectively, during the period of each division. It thus becomes possible to make 1/n as many memory circuits and D/A conversion circuits within the signal line driver circuit as in a conventional example.
