The authors examine the implications of electronic shopping for consumers, retailers, and manufacturers. They assume that near-term technological developments will offer consumers unparalleled opportunities to locate and compare product offerings. They examine these advantages as a function of typical consumer goals and the types of products and services being sought and offer conclusions regarding consumer incentives and disincentives to purchase through interactive home shopping vis-à-vis traditional retail formats. The authors discuss implications for industry structure as they pertain to competition among retailers, competition among manufacturers, and retailer-manufacturer relationships.

One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers: Complexity and Diversity in Structures, Properties, and Applications

Synthetic polymers containing metal centres are emerging as an interesting and broad class of easily processable materials with properties and functions that complement those of state-of-the-art organic macromolecular materials. A diverse range of different metal centres can be harnessed to tune macromolecular properties, from transition- and main-group metals to lanthanides. Moreover, the linkages that bind the metal centres can vary almost continuously from strong, essentially covalent bonds that lead to irreversible or 'static' binding of the metal to weak and labile, non-covalent coordination interactions that allow for reversible, 'dynamic' or 'metallosupramolecular', binding. Here we review recent advances and challenges in the field and illustrate developments towards applications as emissive and photovoltaic materials; as optical limiters; in nanoelectronics, information storage, nanopatterning and sensing; as macromolecular catalysts and artificial enzymes; and as stimuli-responsive materials. We focus on materials in which the metal centres provide function; although they can also play a structural role, systems where this is solely their purpose have not been discussed.

In this paper, a new carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator based on the system of estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique is proposed for interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiple access uplink systems. This new estimator performs better in relatively low signal-to-noise region than a CFO estimator recently proposed by Cao and Yao, and has a much lower computational complexity as well. Simulation results show several performance examples for the proposed CFO estimator which demonstrate the advantages of the proposed estimator over the Cao and Yao's version.

Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Using ESPRIT for Interleaved OFDMA Uplink Systems

Turbulent channel flows laden with particles are investigated using direct numerical simulation with a point-force approximation for small, heavy particles with a diameter smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale of the flow. The Stokes numbers based on the wall units considered in our study are St+ = 0.5, 5, 35, and 125. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Stokes number on turbulence modification in a channel. We found that particles with St+ = 0.5 enhance turbulence by increasing the occurrence of quasistreamwise vortices, while larger-Stokes-number particles attenuate turbulence. Particles with St+ = 0.5 act as an energy source in the streamwise direction in the high-speed regions and low-speed streaks near the wall, which may increase the instability of the low-speed streaks responsible for the birth of new quasistreamwise vortices. Modification of particle-laden near-wall turbulence: Effect of Stokes number

In recent years, the emergence of the term IT Governance (ITG) has pointed to the increasing importance for business of effecting an alignment between its strategic direction and IT units. Many leading organizations have turned to ITG to pursue gains in efficiency, accountability, and regulatory and other forms of compliance, without, however, being able to implement coherent IT schemes on account of a number of challenging issues. Despite the growing interest of academics and practitioners in this area (as attested in recent publications), few studies have characterized the practical inhibitors frustrating the implementation of effective ITG. This paper, therefore, aims to examine empirically how inhibiting features associated with ITG affect the success of IT activities. Through a literature review, we identify 5 factors that work to restrain ITG implementation. Further, this work presents survey data gathered from 96 leading companies in Korea reporting the status of ITG practices according to a specific instrument of its own design.

A Study of the Causal Relationship between IT Governance Inhibitors and Its Success in Korea Enterprises

We present a new two-level TLB (translationlook-aside buffer) architecture that integrates a 2-waybanked filter TLB with a 2-way banked main TLB. Theobjective is to reduce power consumption in embeddedprocessors by distributing the accesses to TLB entriesacross the banks in a balanced manner. First, an advancedfiltering technique is devised to reduce access power byadopting a sub-bank structure. Second, a bank-associativestructure is applied to each level of the TLB hierarchy.Simulation results show that the Energy*Delay productcan be reduced by about 40.9% compared to a fullyassociativeTLB, 24.9% compared to a micro-TLB with4+32 entries, and 12.18% compared to a micro-TLB with16+32 entries.
