The information systems (IS) literature has long emphasized the positive impact of information provided by business intelligence systems (BIS) on decision-making, particularly when organizations operate in highly competitive environments. Evaluating the effectiveness of BIS is vital to our understanding of the value and efficacy of management actions and investments. Yet, while IS success has been well-researched, our understanding of how BIS dimensions are interrelated and how they affect BIS use is limited. In response, we conduct a quantitative survey-based study to examine the relationships between maturity, information quality, analytical decision-making culture, and the use of information for decision-making as significant elements of the success of BIS. Statistical analysis of data collected from 181 medium and large organizations is combined with the use of descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Empirical results link BIS maturity to two segments of information quality, namely content and access quality. We therefore propose a model that contributes to understanding of the interrelationships between BIS success dimensions. Specifically, we find that BIS maturity has a stronger impact on information access quality. In addition, only information content quality is relevant for the use of information while the impact of the information access quality is non-significant. We find that an analytical decision-making culture necessarily improves the use of information but it may suppress the direct impact of the quality of the information content.

Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of existing research on culture in BPM.Design/methodology/approach – This literature review builds on major sources of the BPM community including the BPM Journal, the BPM Conference and central journal/conference databases. Culture in business process management: a literature review

Purpose




This paper argues that there is an absence of halal integrity within the conventional stages of a food chain. This paper adapts the understanding of the different stages and argues the need to develop a critical consciousness for halal integrity within the food chain to address the needs of the ever-growing Muslim consumers’ market. The purpose of this paper is to propose a definition of halal integrity using farm to fork and global food supply chain models.




Design/methodology/approach




The study includes a review of priori literature and media reports regarding cross-contamination of food products with haram (forbidden) components. This background will be used to conceptualise halal integrity using farm to fork and global supply chain models.




Findings




Different interpretations of halal – what is permitted and what is prohibited – exist for the different schools of Islamic legal thought and within the customs of different countries. In order to ensure that food production is embracive of the religious needs of the global Muslim customer market, this paper utilises the farm to fork and global supply chain models to foster a critical awareness of halal needs. Halal integrity should be clearly presenting the details of the halal status of the product and assuring that the requirements for halal as stated are met. Halal integrity not only deals with permitted and prohibited foods, but that the halal status of the food products (i.e. from raw materials until it reaches the consumers) should not be breached (i.e. no cross-contamination with haram products/methods and no ill intents). A formal definition of halal integrity has been proposed.




Research limitations/implications




The SWOT analyses serve as a guideline as the analysis done may be outdated as the environments are constantly changing.




Originality/value




This research although academic is meant to have a real value in improving the integrity of the halal food supply chain, providing value to the food industry, to countries that are concerned about this supply chain and to Muslim consumers. Halal integrity is crucial to the success of the emerging halal market.

Theoretical Reasoning of the Use of Indicators and Indices for Sustainable Development Assessment

The objective of this paper is to define the quality of life (QOL) and the quality of working life (QOWL) con-ceptions and their components, to establish the quality of life evaluation and to report the results of the employee’s quality of working life research. Quality of life is influenced by an individual’s physi-cal and mental health, the degree of independency, the social relationship with the environment and other fac-tors. Quality of life could be defined as an individual’s satisfaction with his or her life dimensions comparing with his or her ideal life. Evaluation of the quality of life depends on one’s value system. The quality of working life could be defined as work place strategies, processes and environment combination, which stimulates employee’s job satisfaction. It also de-pends on work conditions and organization’s efficiency. The quality of life model includes seven factors and indicators to represent these factors. This model was used in the study. The objective of the study was to evalu-ate the quality of life and the quality of working life value of the particular organization’s employees. 26 men and 15 women working in the middle-sized industrial organization were surveyed. They were asked to evaluate seven domains of QOL and QOWL: physical state, material state, emotional state, social relationship, education and self-improvement, self-expression and lei-sure, safety and environment. The study enabled to find out that the employees are more satisfied with quality of life (3.47 points) than qual-ity of working life (3.45 points). The respondents are least satisfied with their material state. Quality of life directly correlates with quality of working life (r  0.76). Employees quality of working life value and their seven factors have a moderately correlation (r  0.55-0.66). While quality of life highly correlates with physical state (r  0.84), material state (r  0.71). Social – demo-graphic elements have less influence on quality of life and quality of working life estimation. The research findings show that studied organization has possibilities to increase its employees’ quality of life and loyalty by improving working conditions and envi-ronment. High value of the quality of working life directly influences higher quality of life.

Quality of Life and its Components’ Measurement

Topical problems of modern business are: how to cull right information from its abundance, how to decide which information is valuable and which one is useless, finally, how to assess the quality of the usable informa-tion. These problems are relevant and important both globally and locally in Lithuanian business. This paper highlights information quality (IQ) management and assessment peculiarities, reveals the importance of IQ in the modern business. The authors present IQ dimensions that are essen-tial to Lithuanian and foreign business information con-sumers because effective IQ assessment and manage-ment depend upon right evaluation of these IQ dimen-sions. The authors of this paper also evaluated informa-tion maturity levels of Lithuanian business organiza-tions and revealed their attitudes towards the informa-tion. This information maturity was assessed according to IBM Corporation proposed Information Maturity Model. In reference to the accomplished research, authors of this paper identify the crucial problems that influence business IQ and also highlight these root problems: absence of proper technologies, poor information tech-nologies (IT), inappropriate software, difficulties to discover reasons for IQ errors, insufficient information security, lack of time to ensure IQ, lack of reliable in-formation sources, poor knowledge of business informa-tion consumer (employee). The findings revealed that the main business IQ assurance problem is influenced simply by the lack of time. To draw a conclusion, to ensure IQ, information must be presented and produced in accordance with clearly defined IQ dimensions, just like other products (services and goods) are supplied and evaluated ac-cording to specific quality characteristics. Conse-quently, the identification of IQ dimensions that are the most important to information consumers, and the esti-mation of IQ measurement criteria and its methodology are the basis for the better information product’s qual-ity assessment. To assure quality information in the organizations the authors of this paper propose: to adapt IQ Man-agement Model that might service like one of the tools for solving IQ assurance problems, to define and choose right business IQ dimensions, and change organiza-tional attitude towards the value of information.

Business Information Quality and its Assessment

This article analyzes the peculiarities and develop-ment of the socially responsible business and conception of the corporate social responsibility (CSR). The CSR concept and those already being as part of socially re-sponsible business, more and more often require the ade-quate behavior from the supply chain partners as well. The main purpose of this article is to initiate the peculi-arities of the content and practice of socially responsible businesses worldwide and in Lithuania, as well as to de-termine the national companies‟ evaluation of the socially responsible business development and its main benefits. Modern organizations are implementing mandatory as well as voluntary management systems. Management system that is based on social responsibility requirements fall to voluntary system category. Every organization chooses how it would like to implement the corporate social responsibility and accountability concept into its daily practices. One of the best known international net-works of socially responsible businesses is Global Com-pact (GC), presented by the United Nations (UN) in 1999. Global Compact seeking two main goals: firstly – to help organizations to implement the principles of GC into business strategy, secondly – to force communication and partnership between various sectors inside and outside the country while seeking universal aims of world‟s de-velopment. Lithuania set the national network of GC in 2005. Today, this national network in Lithuania contains forty two organizations. Other organizations choose standardized management systems of social accountability - SA 8000. Despite the fact that there are over 1000 certified organizations over the world, Lithuania makes its first steps in the area. SC “Utenos Trikotaţas” is the first and the only company at the moment, which implemented and certified its socially responsible management system according to SA 8000 requirements in 2006. This company has other evident achievements, showing its socially responsible business – significant part of its production is certified and marked with “EU flower” and “Oeko-Tex” environmental marks. In 2001 the company implemented environmental man-agement system according to ISO 14000. The daughter Ukrainian enterprise “Mriya” is encouraged and sup-ported by “Utenos Trikotaţas” SC to implement princi-ples, best practices and requirements of standards men-tioned above But there are lack of scientific resumes about the pe-culiarities of design and implementation of social respon-sibility standards, links between other management sys-tems and resulting benefits. This paper provides the analysis of peculiarities when implementing SA 8000 system, it provides the new model of “cause-effect” cycle and continuous improvement in business organization. The paper reveals that certification of social accountabil-ity and responsibility system is not only to gain competi-tive advantage, but also it is a tool to reveal strengths and weaknesses of the company. Innovative Lithuanian companies are spreading the best business practices, in-cluding experience of social responsibility, to organiza-tions from other countries accessing into EU.

The Development of Socially Responsible Business in Lithuania

The orientation towards the value of quality is a new trend of modern quality management sciences. The quality value orientations (national, social, religious, government bodies , market participants, and consumers) and quality culture are rather important in the global economical collaboration and trade, as well as in the international communication on the business, scientific or personal level. The orientations towards the value of quality are manifested in different aspects, such as customer preferences, the use of different management methods and systems, product and service consumption, assortment of goods, business lunch traditions, etc. The sphere where the relationship between the religion and quality is more than obvious – it is religious-ethnical quality, hygiene, ethical and certification control regulation of the Muslim halal products and Jewish kosher products. Unfortunately, the majority of European quality sciences textbooks and scientific articles do not baselessly include religious-ethnical products, quality and certification aspects. Quality sciences and quality academics must always be pioneers in innovations of management measures for business practice and society. Today this quality field is very important for business development of all European countries. This sort of certification can be directed to both products and their manufacturers. The article analyzes particularly one of the fastest growing products certification – halal certification. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the requirements for products manufactured for religious markets and also to prepare a working system to help manufacturers fit the requirements of halal certification. Methods. Analysis and comparison of halal certification requirements and quality assurance guidelines from different countries and institutions; analysis of scientific literature surveying the field of halal certification; the investigation; survey of halal certificated Lithuanian companies and questioning of the consumers. Author’s analysis shows that religious-ethnical requirements considering hygiene and product safety are mostly compatible with corresponding “elite” requirements. The importance of the halal product business is proved by the well-known international organization of quality and ethics of agricultural products and food standardization “ Codex Alimentarius ”, which belongs to World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 1997, it dedicates part of its developments to Muslim and Jewish products mentioned above. Unfortunately, the specific quality and certification requirements of halal and kosher products are little known by the majority of European businessmen. This fact, in our opinion, has a negative impact on the development and competitiveness of this business niche. Several Lithuanian companies already manufacture and export kosher products (veal, strong alcohol drinks, and flour products) and halal products (milk powder, starch, flour products, pharmaceutical herbs, etc.). The system of the halal certification preparation, implementation and support is presented, analyzed and discussed in the article. The results of a study that aimed to reveal realization and development prospects of halal products in such non-Muslim country as Lithuania are given here as well. Products quality religious-ethnical requirements and certification

This article analyses the quality certification, standardization, market and technical barriers to trade relations problems. Certification system and quality management tools development in Lithuania and international context are also analysed. It gives a study of the processes in place designed to normalise international standards, technical regulations and rules in the light of current global economic conditions. The models of Market, standardization and certification relations, Standardization space and typology and National quality certification system are presented in the article. The resultant generalisations and suggestions have been made based on the author‘s research of Lithuanian enterprises. Worldwide economic globalisation processes and the development of international trade have necessitated rapid quality internationalisation processes, as they are crucial in defining the quality of a product or company. These processes mean that more countries are keeping to unified standards and technical regulations, quality and environmental management systems, quality satisfaction evaluation and certification procedures. With their help, it is hoped that not only will the quality of goods and services be assured on an international scale, but that their implementation will lead to the elimination of technical barriers to trade. The main task of this article is to analyze and systemize quality certification, standardization, regulation tools that are used in the Lithuania and international trade, and to present the providence of the more effective usage of them. Technical barriers to international trade are becoming increasingly pervasive because there is a lot of variance in how these technical rules are applied in manufacturing and agriculture, where, in order to guarantee the production of pure and healthy food products, many countries have come up with especially strict and restrictive rules. Given the existing complicated and nonuniform rules, their systematisation is very difficult to achieve. The author suggests technical barriers to trade be divided into five groups. The certification system of Lithuania involves products, organizations and employees conformity assessment. Apart from “traditional” quality (ISO 9001) and environment (ISO 14001) management systems Lithuanian companies use other systems – ISO 22000, ISO/IEC 20000 GMP, ISO/IEC 17021:2006, ISO/TS 16949, ISO/IEC 27001, CMMI, BRC Global Standard, etc. Vehicle technical inspection and jewellery quality hallmarking performed by Lithuanian Assay Office are also a part of product certification activity. It must be highlighted that enterprises in Lithuania do not certify their products to the conformity of EU quality mark (Key Mark) requirements and not develop environmental management system EMAS yet. Nowadays quality management systems (QMS) are implemented no only in business enterprises, but also in hospitals, high education institutions, police departments, city municipalities and other public sector institutions of Lithuania. Although the amount of organizations that use quality management systems ISO 9001 is rising in Lithuania still there are some problems to be solved. However quantitative evaluation of noted indicator is not very informative. That is why the author uses the relative index – the number of ISO 9001 certificates per 1000 citizen for better comparison. According to this index in the number of QMS certificates Lithuania wins behind against the USA, China and India, however signally falls against other new European Union countries. To reach the EU average of this index, Lithuania has to have more than 2000 certificated QMS. Thus, business organizations and state governmental institutions have every reason for the concern. The author provides recommendations for the development of the effective QMS, to improve all certification system of country and introduce the providences of quality management science development.
