Right from the early days, polymer materials have been discovered as being beneficial for various applications but a poor understanding of these materials greatly handicapped their usage. However, with a change in this trend, polymer materials have gradually displaced other materials in most applications. In recent times, due to improved research and knowledge, polymer-based materials are the first choice materials for several applications and are now replacing other materials rapidly. More advanced materials from polymers are being developed daily as a substitute for other materials even in areas where polymers are considered not to be suitable in the time past. More recently, polymers have replaced metals and ceramics in applications like constructions, aerospace, automobiles, and medical. It is no doubt that this trend will continue due to the inherent properties of polymers and sustainability potential. Today, most of the limitations of polymers are being taken care of in the formulation of composite materials. Besides, the adaptation to positive environmental influence is being handled by scientists and researchers. Hence, this review reveals core areas of application of polymer-based composites and the significance of these materials to the advancement of humanity.

Polymer-Based Composites: An Indispensable Material for Present and Future Applications

Biocomposites being environmentally-friendly alternative to synthetic composites are gaining increasing demand for various applications. Hence, biocomposite development should be integrated within a circular economy (CE) model to ensure a sustainable production that is simultaneously innocuous towards the environment. This review presents an overview of the state-of-the-art technologies for the adoption of the CE concept in biocomposite development. The study outlined the properties, environmental and economic impacts of biocomposites. A critical review of the life-cycle assessment of biocomposite for evaluating greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints was conducted. In addition, the opportunities and challenges pertaining to the implementation of CE have been discussed in detail. Recycling and utilisation of bio-based constituents were identified as the critical factors in embracing CE. Therefore, the development of innovative recycling technologies and an enhanced use of novel biocomposite constituents could lead to a reduction in material waste and environmental footprints. This article is one of the first studies to review the circularity of biocomposites in detail that will stimulate further research in enhancing the sustainability of these polymeric materials.

Circular economy in biocomposite development: State-of-the-art, challenges and emerging trends

This investigation is carried out to understand the effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties of hybrid phenol formaldehyde (PF) composite fabricated with Areca Fine Fibres (AFFs) and Calotropis Gigantea Fibre (CGF). Hybrid CGF/AFF/PF composites were manufactured using the hand layup technique at varying weight percentages of fibre reinforcement (25, 35 and 45%). Hybrid composite having 35 wt.% showed better mechanical properties (tensile strength ca. 59 MPa, flexural strength ca. 73 MPa and impact strength 1.43 kJ/m2) under wet and dry conditions as compared to the other hybrid composites. In general, the inclusion of the fibres enhanced the mechanical properties of neat PF. Increase in the fibre content increased the water absorption, however, after 120 h of immersion, all the composites attained an equilibrium state.

Effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties of hybrid natural fibre/phenol formaldehyde composites.

The purpose of this study is to review existing recycling technologies, standards and market situation for plastics recycling. The principal results show that mechanical recycling is the most well-developed recycling approach in terms of industrial feasibility . This approach enables development of plastic recyclates of various quality levels . At the same time, transfer of many research findings into practice is hindered due to the global plastic material flow, strongly differing regional waste management systems and lack of international recycling standards. This review shows that the development of a Circular Economy Model for plastics products requires close cooperation of scientists with standardization committees and industry.

Recent advancement in the natural fiber polymer composites: A comprehensive review

Composites are emerging as realistic alternatives to the metal alloys in many applications like automobiles, marine, aerospace applications, sports goods, etc. Fiber composites offer many advantages such as low specific gravity, tensile strength and modulus, compressive strength and modulus, better fatigue strength, etc. Due to the low specific gravity the strength weight ratio and modulus weight ratio of these composite materials are markedly superior to those of metallic materials. In this work it is concerned general purpose poly ester-based polymer composites are developed by reinforcement of basalt fabric and jute fabric into general purpose poly ester matrix by compression moulding technique. This study describes the basalt fiber and jute fibre reinforced hybrid composites with poly ester resin with different stacking sequence. Fabricated composite plates subjected to mechanical properties like Flexural strength, Impact strength test of the various specimens are calculated by using computer assisted Universal testing machine and Charpy Impact testing machine. From the results it is found that pure basalt fibre combination maintains higher values in both flexural and tensile test. But for impact test basalt fibre is slightly lower than jute fibre reinforced composite.

The paper presents the novel topological approach in optimizing the mechanical properties of the basalt/flax hybrid composite. Hybrid composite were fabricated at 10 different combinations of basalt and flax fiber weight percentage in a polyester matrix fabricated with compression moulding technique. Mechanical strength such as tensile, flexural and impact strength were found as per ASTM standard. Hybrid composite with 40% basalt/10% flax/50% polyester has maximum tensile test of 78.67N/mm2 and maximum flexural strength (504.85N/mm2) was observed in hybrid composite with 35% basalt/15% flax/50% polyester, the maximum impact strength was noted on 5% basalt/45% flax/50% (16.60J/m). Optimization of mechanical strength using novel topological method shows the optimum fiber weight percentage influence in mechanical performance.
