Security and the smart city: A systematic review

Over the past decades, Information and communication technology has undergone tremendous changes, and one of the benefits it has brought is the emergence of social media. As each day passes by, new inventions are developed. The development of mobile technology has made a significant impact in shaping the role of social media. Research shows that mobile devices have taken dominate the world due to the total time spent online. Mobile devices have made it easier for anyone with a device that has internet connectivity to access social media across the globe. Nonetheless, although social media has brought positive impacts on society, the negative effects cannot be overlooked. This paper analyzes the impacts of social media on individuals and the society in general. By exploring different sources of literature, this article expounds on the effects of social media such as crime and security, lack of privacy, political influence, and cyber bullying.

The Impact of Social Media on Society

Population density and distribution of services represents the growth and demographic shift of the cities. For urban planners, population density and check-in behavior in space and time are vital factors for planning and development of sustainable cities. Location-based social network (LBSN) data seems to be a complement to many traditional methods (i.e., survey, census) and is used to study check-in behavior, human mobility, activity analysis, and social issues within a city. This check-in phenomenon of sharing location, activities, and time by users has encouraged this research on gender difference and frequency of using LBSN. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the check-in behavior of Chinese microblog Sina Weibo (referred as " Weibo ") in 10 districts of Shanghai, China, for which we observe the gender difference and their frequency of use over a period. The mentioned districts were spatially analyzed for check-in spots by kernel density estimation (KDE) using ArcGIS. Furthermore, our results reveal that female users have a high rate of social media use, and significant difference is observed in check-in behavior during weekdays and weekends in the studied districts of Shanghai. Increase in check-ins is observed during the night as compared to the morning. From the results, it can be assumed that LBSN data can be helpful to observe gender difference.

Using Location-Based Social Media Data to Observe Check-In Behavior and Gender Difference: Bringing Weibo Data into Play

Social media is becoming an invasive part of the lives of many professionals including those in the healthcare field. One of the countless implications of such an invasion is how the healthcare professional's engagement with social media affects the traditional doctor-patient relationship. The online presence of professionals should be carefully self-monitored as it affects the individual's reputation and society's perception of their profession. Therefore, the contents of public and personal accounts must differ according to their purpose. In the public eye, conflicts of interest must be declared and scientifically-based medical advice should be clearly differentiated from experience-based advice, personal opinions or commercial advertisements. Online doctor-patient relationships risk the privacy of patients as well as the personal privacy of the healthcare professional. Personal accounts created for friends and family should be kept separate from public accounts created for educational, professional or commercial purposes. Published educational material should be clearly differentiated from commercial material so that it is easier for the public to make an informed decision. This paper proposes a code of online ethical conduct to be implemented in Oman.

On Privacy and Security in Social Media – A Comprehensive Study☆

This paper lists all applications of RFID technology in various sectors. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of deploying the technology in the respective fields by elaborating the methods and technical tools used. There are several parameters that determine the use of RFID such as the read range, reader frequency, and type of tag. The performance is identified by reliability, cost effectiveness, efficiency and usage. A detailed insight is given about RFID in the traffic control system for possible application in smart city development. Many countries control the traffic lights using tags and readers to enable police officers to make better decisions. It also helps in finding vehicles that commit crime, stolen vehicles, over-speeding vehicles, vehicle congestion, prevent accidents and many others. As this technology is not very popular in many countries, we provide an analysis to understand the benefits of RFID. The real application of the technology is judged against all parameters to offer a solution for practical use.

A study on possible application of RFID system in different real-time environments

Traditional information retrieval systems lack consistent semantic description of information i.e. they fail to meet users' need due to lack of applying semantic identification to extract the information from the available information. Use of semantic equivalent of the user query will improve the efficiency of the search. In this paper, we propose a framework for semantic based information retrieval. Here we find the concepts that user specify in their query by analyzing the semantic equivalencies. The result which is a set of alternate queries to the main search query is then compared with the existing keyword based system's result. Then, according to the alternate queries' search results, the main queries result gets rearranged by assigning new weights. We further personalize the search and then re-rank the results on user preference. The proposed semantic retrieval model is combined with keyword based model to achieve completeness of the knowledge base. The model which we propose is helping to project the most relevant result URLs to the higher ranks.

Alternate Query Construction Agent for Improving Web Search Result Using WordNet

Ever increasing number of Android malware, has always been a concern for cybersecurity professionals. Even though plenty of anti-malware solutions exist, a rational and pragmatic approach for the same is rare and has to be inspected further. In this paper, we propose a novel two-set feature selection approach based on Rough Set and Statistical Test named as RSST to extract relevant system calls. To address the problem of higher dimensional attribute set, we derived suboptimal system call space by applying the proposed feature selection method to maximize the separability between malware and benign samples. Comprehensive experiments conducted on a dataset consisting of 3500 samples with 30 RSST derived essential system calls resulted in an accuracy of 99.9%, Area Under Curve (AUC) of 1.0, with 1% False Positive Rate (FPR). However, other feature selectors (Information Gain, CFsSubsetEval, ChiSquare, FreqSel and Symmetric Uncertainty) used in the domain of malware analysis resulted in the accuracy of 95.5% with 8.5% FPR. Besides, empirical analysis of RSST derived system calls outperform other attributes such as permissions, opcodes, API, methods, call graphs, Droidbox attributes and network traces.

FeatureAnalytics: An approach to derive relevant attributes for analyzing Android Malware

The city of Bangalore came up with a draft structural plan 2031 to accommodate the emerging challenges of urban growth, congestion and environmental concerns through planning and regulation. In the decade 2000-2010, when the city opened itself to the booming IT industry, its developmental response to the pressures of growth has been through policy measures like airport relocation, introduction of metro rail, satellite township development, traffic improvement projects and revenue layout development. This paper focuses on regulatory evolution in the period 2000-2015 and the way the city regulations changed to accommodate this process. The study attempts to understand what drives planning regulations in Bangalore. The literature on the changes in planning laws in capitalist contexts such as European cities informs us that demands for changes in planning were made by creative class and the political class responded to the same in the interest of the city. In this backdrop, we examine the impact of private sector participation in the city planning and regulation in Bangalore city. Through an analysis of recent changes in the planning laws and the infrastructural regulations, we argue that rent-seeking interests engineered through the nexus of politician-realtor class have driven the regulatory changes in Bangalore.
