We propose and demonstrate an efficient coupler for compact mode conversion between a fiber and a submicrometer waveguide. The coupler is composed of high-index-contrast materials and is based on a short taper with a nanometer-sized tip. We show that the micrometer-long silicon-on-insulator-based nanotaper coupler is able to efficiently convert both the mode field profile and the effective index, with a total length as short as 40 microm. We measure an enhancement of the coupling efficiency between an optical fiber and a waveguide by 1 order of magnitude due to the coupler.

Optical biosensors have exhibited worthwhile performance in detecting biological systems and promoting significant advances in clinical diagnostics, drug discovery, food process control, and environmental monitoring. Without complexity in their pretreatment and probable influence on the nature of target molecules, these biosensors have additional advantages such as high sensitivity, robustness, reliability, and potential to be integrated on a single chip. In this review, the state of the art optical biosensor technologies, including those based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), optical waveguides, optical resonators, photonic crystals, and optical fibers, are presented. The principles for each type of biosensor are concisely introduced and particular emphasis has been placed on recent achievements. The strengths and weaknesses of each type of biosensor have been outlined as well. Concluding remarks regarding the perspectives of future developments are discussed.

Optical biosensors: an exhaustive and comprehensive review.

During the last decade there has been a rapidly growing interest in integrated optical (IO) sensors, expecially because many of them principally allow for sensitive, real time, label-free-on-site measurements of the concentration of (bio-)chemical species. This review aims at giving an overview of the most relevant developments in this area. After a general introduction into the field of IO sensors for the chemical domain, relevant aspects of integrated optics and chemical sensing are presented in short. A large variety of IO sensing platforms are introduced and discussed: interferometers, resonators, coupling-based devices such as grating couplers and surface plasmon resonance based sensors and finally a new class of sensors based on chemically induced field profile changes. Strong and weak points of principle and of configuration based on these principles are indicated and the main performance data of the IO sensing platforms, especially the obtained resolution, are indicated. Best resolutions of the chemically induced refractive indices on the order of magnitude $10^{-6}-10^{-8}RIU$ can be obtained, corresponding to a resolution of $10^{-3}-10^{-5}$nm in the chemically induced growth of layer thickness of chemo-optical transducer materials. Depending on the anlalyte and the type of transduction layer chemical concentrations down to some ppb or some pg $ml^{-1}$can be determined. Several IO sensing systems are commercially available. Extension of individual sensors to sensor arrays is treated and finally an outlook for the future is given.

An optical apparatus comprises an optical device fabricated on a substrate, an external-transfer optical waveguide fabricated on the substrate and/or on the optical device, and a transmission optical waveguide. The optical device and/or the external-transfer waveguide are adapted for and positioned for transfer of optical power therebetween (end-transfer or transverse-transfer). The external-transfer waveguide and/or the transmission waveguide are adapted for transverse-transfer of optical power therebetween (mode-interference-coupled or adiabatic). The transmission waveguide is initially provided as a component mechanically separate from the substrate, device, and external-transfer waveguide. Assembly of the transmission waveguide with the substrate, device, and/or external-transfer waveguide results in relative positioning of the external-transfer waveguide and the transmission waveguide for enabling transverse-transfer of optical power therebetween. Optical power transfer between the device and the transmission waveguide through the external-transfer waveguide is thereby enabled. The transmission waveguide may preferably comprise a planar waveguide on a waveguide substrate.

Optical junction apparatus and methods employing optical power transverse-transfer

The novel waveguide structures described in this paper have nonlinearly tapered shapes that result in low radiation losses despite their relatively short lengths. The core at the waveguide endface connected with the fiber has a very small cross section and an expanded mode field with a non-Gaussian shape. The taper structures are analyzed by using an improved step-transition method. This method is a based on the theory of enclosing a waveguide within electrical walls and that can therefore treat the radiation modes in a tapered waveguide as discrete mode spectra. Analyzing the relationships between the lengths and shapes of the tapers and the radiation loss due to the tapers show that appropriately tapered semiconductor waveguides operating at an optical wavelength of 1.55 /spl mu/m and having a taper length of less than 0.7 mm can have a radiation loss of only 0.1 dB and a coupling loss with a conventional single-mode fiber of less than 0.5 dB. >
