High-speed III-V semiconductor intensity modulators

In this paper, closed-form expressions are presented which model the frequency-dependent even- and odd-mode characteristics of parallel coupled microstrip lines with hitherto unattained accuracy and range of validity. They include the effective dielectric constants, the characteristic impedances using the power-current formulation, as well as the open-end equivalent lengths for the two fundamental modes on coupled microstrip. The formulas are accurate into the millimeter-wave region. They are based on an extensive set of accurate numerical data which were generated by a rigorous spectral-domain hybrid-mode approach and are believed to represent a substantial improvement compared to the state-of-the-art and with respect to the computer-aided design of coupled microstrip filters, directional couplers, and related components.

Accurate Wide-Range Design Equations for the Frequency-Dependent Characteristic of Parallel Coupled Microstrip Lines

In this paper, electrical characterization and modeling of conductive textiles are presented. A dedicated measurement setup has been developed to allow reliable connection of the textile samples with the equipment cables. Geometrical fabric structures and fabrication tolerances as well as high frequency properties up to 6 GHz for four types of textiles have been determined. Transmission lines with controlled characteristic impedance have been realized enabling the characterization of typical line attenuation factors. This work shows that textile transmission lines can be used for frequencies up to 1.2 GHz and 120 MHz with the maximal lengths of 10 and 100 cm, respectively.

Electrical characterization of textile transmission lines

A survey is given of the so-called spectral-domain approach, an analytical and numerical technique particularly suited for the solution of boundary-value problems in microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits, The mathematical formulation of the analytical part of that approach is described in a generalized notation for two- and three-dimensional strip and slot-type fields. In a similar way, the numerical part of the technique is treated, keeping always in touch with the mathematical and physical background, as well as with the respective microwave applications. A discussion of different specific aspects of the approach is presented and outlines the peculiarities of shielded-, covered-, and open-type problems, followed by a brief review of the progress achieved in the last decade (1975-1984). we survey closes with considerations on numerical efficiency, demonstrating that spectral-domain computations can by speeded up remarkably by analytical preprocessing. The presented materal is based on ten years of active involvement by the author in the field and reveals a variety of contributions by West German researchers previously not known to the intenational microwave community.

The Spectral-Domain Approach for Microwave Integrated Circuits

A frequency-dependent hybrid-mode analysis of single and coupled slots and coplanar strips is presented. The dispersion characteristic and characteristic impedance of the structures are obtained by applying a Fourier transform technique and evaluating the resulting expressions numerically using the method of moments. Numerical results are presented and compared with results published by other investigators. The experimental performance of a slot-line coupler is compared with predicted performance based upon the results presented here for coupled slots. Excellent agreement has been obtained in all cases.
