Impact of water management interventions on hydrology and ecosystem services in Garhkundar-Dabar watershed of Bundelkhand region, Central India

Climate change is expected to adversely affect agricultural production in India. This study was undertaken to understand the dryland farmers’ perceptions about climate change, its impacts and indigenous adaptation measures they pursue. From the analysis of data collected from 200 dryland farmers of Villupuram and Virudhunagar districts in Tamil Nadu, it was found that 81 % of farmers experienced climate change in terms of decreasing and unpredictable rainfall, increasing temperature and delayed onset of monsoon. Analysis of climate trend validated their perceptions. Farmers are convinced that climate change has affected their farming through frequent crop failures, declining crop and livestock yield, reduced water level in tanks and wells and new pest and diseases. Amidst various constraints, farmers strive to adapt to climate change by manipulating sowing date, reducing fertilizer application, selecting alternate crops and drought tolerant varieties, etc. Elderly farmers adapt more to climate change while access to irrigation gives leverage to try alternate farming practices.

Some primary producers are more likely to transform their agricultural practices in response to climate change than others

Exploring the impacts of climate change on agriculture is one of important topics with respect to climate change. We quantitatively examined the impacts of climate change on winter wheat yield in Northern China using the Cobb–Douglas production function. Utilizing time-series data of agricultural production and meteorological observations from 1981 to 2016, the impacts of climatic factors on wheat production were assessed. It was found that the contribution of climatic factors to winter wheat yield per unit area (WYPA) was 0.762–1.921% in absolute terms. Growing season average temperature (GSAT) had a negative impact on WYPA for the period of 1981–2016. A 1% increase in GSAT could lead to a loss of 0.109% of WYPA when the other factors were constant. While growing season precipitation (GSP) had a positive impact on WYPA, as a 1% increase in GSP could result in 0.186% increase in WYPA, other factors kept constant. Then, the impacts on WYPA for the period 2021–2050 under two different emissions scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 were forecasted. For the whole study area, GSAT is projected to increase 1.37°C under RCP4.5 and 1.54°C under RCP8.5 for the period 2021–2050, which will lower the average WYPA by 1.75% and 1.97%, respectively. GSP is tended to increase by 17.31% under RCP4.5 and 22.22% under RCP8.5 and will give a rise of 3.22% and 4.13% in WYPA. The comprehensive effect of GSAT and GSP will increase WYPA by 1.47% under RCP4.5 and 2.16% under RCP8.5.

Agriculture the major economic and social activity in the globe. It is understood that agriculture is highly
sensitive to climatic variability and likely to be affected most to predicted climate change. The fourth assessment
report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reconfirmed that the phenomenon of existence of
climate change in recent decades is due to anthropogenic activities. It is also revealed the availability of wide array
of adaptation options for agro-ecosystem to cope up with the impact of climate change. However, it is important
to design more extensive adaptation strategies to reduce vulnerability of agriculture and rural poor to impacts of
climate change. Climate change impacts and responses are presently observed as autonomous adaptation in the
physical and ecological systems as well as in human adjustments to resource availability and risks at different
spatial and trophic levels. But these strategies are not enough to reduce the current anthropogenic driven climate
change, so there is a need to adopt the planned adaptation. This paper reviews the findings based on the series
of studies carried across the globe on the potential adaptation strategies to alleviate the impact of climate change
by improving the resilience of the agro-ecosystems. Adaptation strategies have to be in place to reduce vulnerability
to climate change through developing consensus between industrialized countries and developing countries at
global scale, whereas new public policies in place at national regional and local level is prudent to support
adaptation research, insurances, incentives to farmers to adapt new technologies.
