Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the ecological implications of mycorrhizal associations in natural ecosystems and the role of soil or environmental factors, mycorrhizal fungus characteristics or host plant properties. Mycorrhizal associations are regulated by features of the host plant and mycorrhizal fungus, as well as by soil conditions and environmental factors. Factors which can influence the occurrence and effectiveness of mycorrhizal associations include (1) root properties (2) edaphic or climatic factors (3) soil organisms, (4) soil disturbance, and (5) host-fungus compatibility. Several other complex ecological topics also discussed in the chapter include (1) mycorrhizal phenology , (2) factors responsible for varying degrees of mycorrhizal dependency in host plants, (3) the role of mycorrhizal hyphae in soil (4) nutrient competition involving mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants, and (5) mycorrhizal interactions involving pollution and other stresses, the rhizosphere, soil properties and allelopathy. Finally, the chapter also discusses the population ecology of mycorrhizal fungi and the influence of their associations on plant population ecology.

▪ Abstract Beneficial plant-associated microbes can profoundly influence plant health by suppressing disease, enhancing nutrient uptake, fixing atmospheric nitrogen, and promoting plant growth. Host variation, among cultivars or plant genotypes, for response to beneficial microorganisms suggests that plant genes play a role in supporting these interactions. Such host variation can be found among diverse groups of microorganisms including rhizobia, mycorrhizal fungi, and microbial biocontrol agents. Discrete variation among plant genotypes for interaction with beneficial microbes has led to the discovery of single genes that specify compatible interactions. Continuous variation for interaction phenotypes such as disease suppression, plant growth, or nutrient uptake have led to hypotheses, and in some cases genetic descriptions, of multigenic control of these interactions. Host variation for interactions with beneficial plant-associated microbes

Genotypes of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum L. Leeke) were examined for differences in vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) colonization and response to inoculation. For thirty genotypes tested across three field locations there was a range of mycorrhizal colonization intensity between 25 and 56%. In another experiment with two male-sterile lines, restorer lines and their derived crosses, grown in pots filled with non-sterilized soil there were significant differences between genotypes for colonization by mycorrhiza. This showed hostgenotype dependence for mycorrhizal colonization.
Root growth rates, mycorrhizal root length, percentage root colonization and plant growth and P uptake were studied in ten genotypes. A set of 3 genotypes with similar root lengths varied significantly with regard to mycorrhizal root length and the percentage colonization. This supports the suggestion that VAM colonization and spread is dependent on the host genotype. The growth responses differed significantly between the genotypes and they also differed in their responses to P uptake and VAM inoculation. The utility of host-genotype dependent differences in VAM symbiosis in plant breeding is discussed.
